seat belt & door alarm

Okay for the last week my seat belt and door alarm have been going nuts. They go off at random times. Door closed, it thinks its open. Seat belt on, it thinks its off. If anyone has any clue as haw I should go about fixing the issue id be happy as hell.

i also have a question about this. i have the seatbelt buckles unplugged so they dont harass me anymore when i drive unbuckled (like 1/4 mile down my driveway to the mailbox) and all is good. but i took the door apart today to fix a roller issue and noticed that both belt retractors are plugged into some wiring as well. whats this for? can i unplug them?

Check the tabs inside of the door (just beneath the latch, where the paint and tire codes would be). These tend to go bad on these cars, or just may be loose.

Those wires signal whether the seatbelt is buckled or not when the car is on, the ones under the seat tell the car whether someone is in the seat or not (I believe). If they don't signal now, I don't think unplugging them will do anything except stop the warning lights from...warning you.

There is no sensor in the seat. Belts were designed to stay buckled at all times on the coupes and hatches. You're supposed to lift the belt and step out. Note the "EMERGENCY RELEASE" on the belts and center console. As I recall, unplugging the sensor at the seatbelt latch only disables the light.

Okay... As for the door latch. Would that be the one inside the door its self or the one on the body of the car?

really? I wondered why there was a commercial grade warning plaque on the dam console.. and the belts always get caught in the door when closing it. I have to go out and try this now...

I believe it is only for the cars equipped with the "automatic" or "passive" shoulder/lap belt combo. Not sure when those first appeared, but my 87 lxi doesn't have them. I think 89's do, but not sure about 88's. Might depend on manufacture date in 88.

I never liked those - just a pointless over-complex nuisance to me, since I always belt in.

None of these cars ever had automatic seat belts, and I believe the '86 hatch was the only one that differed from the other hatches and the coupes.

Okay that's not that easy of a fix. It only took ten minutes to get the latch of the junk yard car. Then about an hour to get it into my car. I had to take my time and not mess up my door panel. Over all it wasn't that hard to do it. It just took more time than I would have liked to do it.

well, ive got a dx hatch and the belts are in the door. there are wires going to the belt recoilers and i dont know why or what they are for. all i can think of is that they are to lock the belts in case of a crash.

Okay. I drove the honda today for the first time. I went through all that work of replacing the latches on both doors and the alarm is still messing up. Is there anyway of looking at them to tell if they are messed up?

Not really, they're sealed. It's pretty common for these to go bad. I've replaced at least 3 on my accords. Dealer is the only sure way, unfortunately.

so if im reading correctly the way the seatbelt is supposed to work, you open the door, the seat side latch releases and you dont have to push the red unlock piece? That is only in case of an emergency? That would be super pimp but mine dont work that way?

^ I tried that, not easy nor is it comfortable. It's much easier to hit the red button like a normal person would, plus you'd look kinda weird struggling your neck to get out of your car without getting choked.

i know the feeling of sturggleing to get out of your car.... my 91 has automatic seat belts that slide.... when i had them hooked up they would start to slide forward then slide back in to locking position as u were getting out warping around your neck and choking you really bad... im so glad i unpluged them... but now i have to flip them around my back when i get out and have an annoying blinking seat belt led

The belts are supposed to stay latched all the time. There was a federal mandate to install passive safety restraints in cars at that time. If I'm remembering correctly, most manufacturers were going with air bags, but Honda went with a seat belt design that mounted all the seat belt hardware to the end of the door and put a big red sign next to the belt release saying only to use it in emergencies (ie: never unlatch it). The idea was for the belt to swing outward with the door and provide enough space for you to get in without getting caught in the belt. I applaud them for not using air bags because it kept the car's weight down and MPG up. (I also dislike air bags because if you are in the wrong spot when they deploy, you'll need reconstructive surgery to put you back together). Unfortunately, the seat belt design didn't quite work out as planned. You couldn't get into the car without getting tangled in the belt and no one left the belts buckled. The doors were insanely heavy and the panels got all chopped up from the buckle getting slammed in the door all the time.

there is no way to modify the things to make it reel faster ?

Same thing goes with automatic belts: people never buckle the bottom half, and I guess you can be pulled over and written a ticket for "not wearing [half of] your seat belt".
