I have a JDM RHD CA2 1985 Accord, looking for shocks I found the part number in the suspension forums, which gave one part number for the front (KYB GR-2 #341072) and one part number (KYB GR-2 #341074) for the rear.

On the site I looked at to price to see what I would have to budget to buy them stateside and ship over here and to compare prices to NZ prices, the site has different shocks for front right and front left. 341072 as above is for the front right, while they give KYB GR-2 #341743 as the front left shock.


My question is, should I just get one front type, or should I get the different front types and swap sides since the website is American and you drive on the wrong (right) side of the road while we drive on the right (left) side of the road?

Does shock type, presumably different damping rates each side, make any difference between RHD and LHD cars?


I know some sports cars have different drivers side shocks and springs so the drivers side on an empty car is a little higher when sitting empty than when the driver is in. The extra weight of the driver vs an empty passenger seat brings the car level and matches side to side balance and suspension performance.

But surely an ordinary sedan wouldn't be that closely matched?

Hey guys very quick question,

Is this Metra radio harness compatible with the stock '89 lx-i head unit (the harness)? Amazon says it fits, but the very first 1 star review says it did not fit his '88 accord?

EDIT: Do I also need an antenna adapter?

That probably fits the wiring harness of the car but not the actual head unit. If your wiring harness has been cut best bet is probably a junk yard or maybe ebay. If your looking to have an adapter to fit your wiring harness but to use with an aftermarket head unit that should be the one but Walmart has them and if it doesn't fit you can take it back easily. I got Pioneers in both of mine and got the adapters at Walmart. You shouldn't need an antenna adapter.

If I get an engine detail of some sort (i.e. pressure washing), will it make my car stop smoking? It smokes from oil leaking onto the exhaust manifold, which at this point (and from when I bought it) is a layer of grease. Will that work or will the oil just leak onto the clean manifold and still smoke?

You need to replace your valve cover gasket, then clean it.

Valve Cover gaskets run around 8$ and there's only 3 nuts/washers/grommets to remove to replace it. Takes 15 minutes.
Make sure you wipe clean the entire surface that the gasket fits into so it doesn't start a new leak on your new gasket. I also would recommend replacing the cap nuts with new M6-1.0 nuts cause the older nuts tend to slowly strip over time, and you can tighten your VC alittle tighter.

Make sure you replace the grommets also. They are what puts pressure on the valve cover.

Does anyone know where to get just the grommets? I don't need a gasket kit...I thought about using the red polyurethane sway bar bushings, cutting them down to size and using them. They'd last much longer and are impervious to petroleum products.

I think the torque specification for tightening the nuts on the valve cover bolts should be mentioned here; using a torque wrench for this is the best way to do it. I don't have a reference on this now but I have have a note in a Word that I tightened to about 8 ft-lbs when I changed the valve cover gasket on my 88 Accord in April 2012.

Charlie, even if you stop leakage from the valve cover, you may get some burning smell for awhile unless you also do some engine cleaning to remove the mess caused by the leaking valve cover gasket.

If no inch pound torque wrench or ft lb that goes as low as 8. Fy lb is handy then Use 1/4 drive ratchet or short box end wrench so you don't accidentley over torque to a ridiculous metal bending amount.
The bigger or heavier or longer the tool you use the more likely the leverage and tool weight alone will cause overtightening.

I'm glad someone mentioned the torque setting. I was thinking about it after someone talking about nuts stripping and being able to tighten it a little tighter, but I hadn't got back here. I have always tightened mine 9 ft-lbs and have never had a problem. Tightening any more than that won't help anything, as they bottom out on the studs anyway. The grommets compressing is what puts pressure on the gasket.

Torque spec is 7 ft-lbs. which is roughly wrist tight. And yeah, they bottom out on the studs. Any torque over 7 ft-lbs does nothing but stress out the studs.

I have one stupid question: Why people here and there can buy such a cheap 86-89 accord at 300-400usd? Whereas i find some particular auto part on ebay at the same price of that car?

I think a lot of people just aren't being entirely honest when it comes to how much they really paid for their car... that holds true with new car prices as well. Everyone seems to post about unbelievable deals online. The other part are the different regions of the country... some makes/models might be in higher demand in some places than others. Hondas here in Central Florida generally aren't cheap... they are in demand, especially 4th gens. A nice 4th gen can still run you $2-3k easily. I paid $2300 for my 1990 with 115k miles in near mint condition... I consider that a really good deal.

Also, every so often someone just doesn't realize what they have and practically gives it away... some lucky people just happen to be in the right place (on Craigslist) at the right time. I am not one of them.

What would cause my car to shake like an unabalanced tire other than an unbalanced tire? It only shakes when Accelerating, coasting at the same speed in gear or coasting in neutral. Stops shaking when I apply brakes, decelerate in gear or am going less than 30 MPH. Tires have been balanced recently so that isn't it. Any ideas?

Check your suspension and hub bearings for excess play. Jack the car up and try to shake each tire different directions. There should be no movement, except that it can turn. If there is, try to determine what part is allowing it to move. Also, check your rims for bends from potholes.

Rims are good. They were my first thought being Aluminum. Had them checked by a good friend at a tire/rim shop. Drivers side Hub/Bearing assembly is a year old, though it's like it has a tiniest bit of play equally on both sides if really any. I really need to replace my ball joints all around. My tie rod ball joints seemed too well broken in...think this could cause it? They have literally no resistance when I pop out the ball joints and move them. I need new LCA bushings on each side. Currently I'm not aware of any bushings I can just press in. As far as I know, I gotta buy the whole new LCA to get the new bushings. Ideas? Opinions?
I noticed rockauto.com sells just a ball joint. Are all our ball joints on the LCA/UCA and the knuckle all the same sizes?
