New Owner/Oil Question

Hello! I just bought an 88 Accord LX with 220k on it. I got a great deal and the car is in decent shape. It drives great!

Questions: Previous owner states the #4 cylinder is low compression, anything I can do to remedy this?

Also, it needs an oil change. Would a thicker synthetic oil help this car run longer?

my coupe has 244xxx on it i used casrol high milage and its great cleaned out the engine so good in fact all the sludge cloging up leaks came un cloged and now i leak 1qt of oil out of i think my front main seal lol

What are the numbers for the compression check. I use "Engine Restore" it was recommended by my shop instructor who is a Honda master mechanic.

10w30 or 40 but i used 30 in most 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder imports

Just buy a cheap compression gauge (they are fairly cheap on eBay), and do both a wet and a dry test (google is your friend ). If the compression is low on the dry test but higher on the wet test the rings on cylinder #4 are shot, if the compression is low on both tests it is most likely a problem with the valves. As long as it isn't too low, and it still seems to run good I would just do what nswst8 said and use some Engine Restore (worked wonders in my Dad's F-150) and drive it till you can find a more permanent fix.

Putting high mileage oil in a car that's used regular oil all the through the high miles will clean out all of the gunk that holds the engine together. If you don't start using high mileage at the right time (usually too late for most), this happens.

and i allways run thick oil in a car that burns oil, i run 20w50 in my accord (burns 10w30 every 250 miles, 20w50 lasts 1000 miles)

It's running at 90 in cylinder #4. Car runs great, a little sluggish but totally functional.

if it isn't misfiring then I would change the oil with castrol gtx 20w50w for summer, start driving it and enjoying it
