Two keys to use my 3g?

I have an 87 Lxi hatchback and it needs to keys to be driven. One for the door and one for the ignition. The one for the door is a Honda key. The other key was made at walmart or something from the original that i don't have. Some other weird things about my car is that when opening the driver side door. You have to turn left to close the door and turn right to open the door, but on passenger its normal, left open, right close. I was wondering if I could somehow get a single key for my car.

Doors are mirrored, therefore the locks are, too. Why can't you use one or the other for everything? Some Honda dealers will let you used the VIN and title to get an oem set of keys. That's what I do.

They are different keys. The key that can open the doors cant turn on the car and vice versa with the other key. So i should have one key that can do all of this right? And i can still get new keys for this car at a Honda dealer?

That's weird. First, try lubricating all of the locks with graphite and see if that helps at all. Then I'd call local Honda dealers and see if they're able to make a key for you with just the VIN and title. If that doesn't work, take the keys in to them and see if they can find out if either are the master or a copy.

Do the keys look different? The cut part, not the head.

umm this isnt weird at all!

at one point or another the previous owner switched the ignition. hence why there are 2 different keys.

the one that you use for your doors is most likely the original car key especially if it opens every door, the glove box, and the trunk.

Yeah somebody probably broke their key off in the lock or something. You just have swapped locks. You might be able to find somebody to re-key them to be the same, from what I understand though its hard to find someone who can. And expensive.

My first car, an 88 tempo, had 4 keys. Doors were one key, trunk was another, ignition was another, and some obviously not factory glove box lock was the fourth.

you can rekey it yourself pretty easily if you're confident in taking apart small things and using a grinder.

the ignition switch was changed. Take it out, go to a locksmith, give him the key for the door, and for $25 or so he'll rekey the switch so you'll have only one key. That's what I did when I got my new switch (it had begun trapping the key).

haha, I guess ill just keep using 2 keys. I was more wondering whether it was normal or not, than really wanting to get one key. I would like to put in a keyless entry system though.

Re: Two keys to use my 3g?

Repinning the lock cylinders is easy. Remove the cylinder and insert the key. Reposition the pins to best suit the key (they shouldn't stick out of either side). the inside of the pins (spring side) can be shaved to better match. Pins that don't have enough metal to be matched need to be replaced or left out. I used a sharp knife to shave the pins. It helps to have an extra cylinder around for parts.
