a proper manual steering rack would be the way to go, they're pretty light to steer compared to a power steering rack with just the belt or the pump removed

I really need to sticky that. I think I will do a real write up when I depower mine for the race car.
Funny you guys are talking about pulling power steering. In racing they want it, and put it on cars that didn't have it. I'd love to have it on my civic.

Please do a write up. A car with manual steering from the factory will have MUCH lower resistance than a disabled PS unit. My 1g had a manual rack from the factory. It had a large diameter steering wheel and there was no hydraulic fluid to push through tiny apertures like in a PS rack. I never even noticed that it wasn't power. It was truly a great steering setup. By contrast, I drove my 2g for a few weeks with the PS belt off. The rack was leaking like a son of a gun and I didn't want to spend the money on a new one. It sucked. Low-speed steering was a constant fight. After a few weeks, I got sick of it and bought a new rack. Simply pulling the PS belt sounds great in theory, but practice is a different matter altogether. It's not the same as a proper manual rack.

It really depends on what you're doing with the race car. Most autocrossers want it because you're not ever really moving that fast. Road racers with HUGE tires want it because they have huge tires. We don't need it all that much, because once you've stripped our cars down, there's not a hell of a lot of weight to deal with, and most people don't run 300+ width tires. I'm hoping to fit 275's under my 3gee.
If you're going to run the PS rack without power you need to drain the fluid and gut the valve body so it isn't pushing the fluid back and forth all the time. It also helps to take the rack apart and grease all the sliding parts so they don't wear out from lack of lubrication. I did this on my Prelude and even sitting still it's not that bad to turn the wheel. If you're moving faster than 5MPH it's easy.

Well i flushed the prestone fluid out and filled with the honda fluid from bardal and it's working better.still a little stiff but i think it will get better as i drive it.Definitely better than before.
It's just as good as it was before it screwed up,working pretty good.I was surprizwd that a compression fitting holds up in the line.
Thats good, good thing you flushed it soon.
