stuck bolt

Hey Folks! Another question . . . what's your best trick for removing a stuck bolt? A few weeks ago I posted about the tranny in my '89 Accord (5 speed manual). Your posts WORKED for me! Changed fluid to Honda MTF, problem fixed. I decided to do my Mom a favor and change her tranny fluid ('90 Accord 5 speed, only 150k) and I can't get the fill bolt out. I drained the old stuff and now I can't budge the 17 mm fill bolt. Any ideas? Yeah . . it's rounded . . . and I doused it with penetrating oil . . . I tried a vice-grip on it (limited access) . . . broke a socket on it. Guess the oil was in from the factory . . . 20 years? Don't know, she got it used and drives only a few thousand a year. BTW . . . I was doing a normal oil/filter for her and decided to do her a favor with the tranny fluid change . . . go figure, now it's stuck in my garage and I gave her my '89 to drive (custom wheels, front air dam, custom exhaust with chrome tip, etc.) and she's bitchin' about the noise it makes! Help!

Get an extractor. Or you can try to smash a 16mm socket on there, but the extractor is probably your best bet.

You should be able to get them at Sears, maybe lowes or home depot too.

I've got a set of the mastercraft versions of that. Generally work well, provided that the bolt isn't too stuck in there. They tend to work best when you can beat them on with a hammer, but it sounds like you don't have the room for that.

May have to locate someone with a portable welder and weld on a nut to the head of that bolt. Not only does it give you new wrench flats to grab on to, but the welding actually shrinks the bolt slightly and makes it easier to remove.

Do you have a 6 point 17mm socket? Try taping that on using a breaker bar and a cheater bar. I don't think you can get at it with an Impact driver at least on a 3g. Impacts vibration sometimes knock a bolt loose. Heating it with a propane torch until the penetrating oil smokes also.

Other thing you can try is an adjustable wrench on the good sides of the bolt if you can find any.

Sears sells a set of extractors for close to 40 or 50 bucks, but they're good quality. While you're there, get a breaker bar, referred to in a previous post. Thats a long (30" or 3') socket bar with a 1/2" fitting on the end. Put that into the extractor socket, and that bolt WILL come out.

Don't bother with the fill hole.

Make sure the thing is really empty.

Remove the Vehicle Speed Sensor (vss) and add 2L from the top of the transmission.

Can you post a picture of the VSS? I'm not certain of where that is or what it looks like. The VSS isn't in my Haynes. Thanks so much. Nothing has worked so far, just busted knuckles! Rocketman

Number 3 in the picture. Just follow the speedometer cable and it'll get you there.



Remove bolt #10 and it should come out.

Thanks Carotman! I'll give that a try tomorrow. I know where the speedo cable is . . . the picture looks like the cable plugs into the VSS . . . and the VSS looks like it comes out with one bolt, only goes back one way, right? So I fill through the hole where the VSS goes? Thanks again! Rocketman

Yup, the cable plugs into the vss and only 1 bolt holds it down.

It makes filling up the transmission a lot easier since you can use a regular funnel.
