    Unhappy wrecked diff?

i have this problem where my car randomly makes a clunk when i take off, not as soon as I apply load on the wheels, but about 1 second after I've started moving. I thought it was my engine mounts, but after replacing them (solid ones with stock ones) the problem became worse (I might just swap the other ones back in)

well today I found out there's lots of play in the diff (i think?) I put the car in gear, jack up one side, and i can rotate the wheel about 45 degrees before it stops. same goes with both sides, I checked the axles & intermediate shaft, all of which are in good condition, meaning the play is inside the gearbox somewhere.... so what do now? I need this car to work properly over the next few weeks reliably, cause I'd rather not be stranded in the middle of nowhere

    Re: wrecked diff?

it only makes the clunk sound when moderately turning at low speed. when driving at a decent speed (30-40kph +) it's goes fine. also when rolling to a stop it sounds like you can hear something in the engine bay broken rattling around? but once stopped, you can't hear it anymore.

i need help fast, i will convert the car back to auto if i need to as a very last resort. i've got 4 days before long trips begin

    Re: wrecked diff?

are you sure it's not something loose like flywheel bolts or something broke in the clutch? Mine has been like that for years and I've never had an issue

hmm good thinking, i hope its something like that. I'll try and check that now. hopefully that can be done by just removing that little cover

    Re: wrecked diff?

okay diff is indeed fucked. i pulled one cv joint out, and after all the metal oil came out, I could stick my finger in there & wriggle that pin all over the place. bugga. now I have to find all my automatic conversion stuff

    Re: wrecked diff?

That sucks man. You're more mechanic than I am that you are just going to convert your car back to AT in 4 days. You make it sound like changing your socks. Good luck with that.

I have to ask though: how in God's name did you break a diff?

I went through 2 tranny's. blew up both diffs. They are weak. Open diffs FTL.

    Re: wrecked diff?

Yup, I've had a diff explode too. But it was a used transmission that I hadn't bothered to rebuild.

Left behind a trail of oil, pinion gears and aluminum shrapnel on the road. Like a giant snail robot.

    Re: wrecked diff?

hay it was all going just like your normal swap, no idea why that happened though. now for some more bad luck, the other b20a box wont even bolt on to the motor???

I have a b20a bolted to a auto box behind the garage, ill drag that out tomorrow since it's all together & working & put that in the car. fun

What happened to the auto trans to cause the crack? Did it fall when lifting it into the car?

    Re: wrecked diff?

okay so i smashed apart a auto gaybox

    and got teh diff out

only to find out it's different to the manual diff

    fail.

i took the inside gear thingies out of teh auto diff and stuck them in the manual one

seems to fit, i haven't put the pin in yet though, but here's a comparison between a good, worn & broken pin lol

lets hope this all goes back together well. First time I've pulled a gearbox apart
