Haha in case you're wondering wtf is that all about, I'm building a carPC for my car. And I've been meaning to do this since '01 haha.
I've acquired the laptop for free from my bro. Its an Asus EeePC 701 with Celeron 900 with 2GB of RAM and 4GB of storage (SSD) + 80GB external hard drive for my media files. More can be added later. Its fast enough for this purpose. Here are the features for now :
- Music player
- Movie player
- GPS
- Bluetooth handsfree
- Interweb browser
- + regular functionality of a regular computer
The plan is to reuse the screen of the laptop (7 inches) and mount the screen down where the tape holder goes. But the idea is not finalized yet. I don't listen to the radio so I might ditch the headunit altogether.
More PICS when I get the parts. Still waiting for my touch screen panel and GPS module then I can start tearing the car apart (again ><)
Here are some screenshots of the frontend (running WinXP + RideRunner)
Main menu
Handsfree
GPS (Garmin MobilePC) which obviously didn't work since I need my GPS module.

Dude! That skin is so sick! Now you are making me REALLY want to put a car PC together... Ahhh!
you got me wanting to build a car pc also!!but the screens are so hard to find
I knew someone at work who had a car PC, I thought it was freakin sweet. He could have wifi in his car so wherever he drove, he had internet. Would be a pain in the ass to set up the whole thing though. The dude who did the car PC at work said it took him about 8 months to get all the parts compiled for his. I think he put his in a malibu though. He was a real big nerd haha.
Do it. NAO.
They are all over eBay, but the easiest way would be doing it my way since these netbooks are available for dirt cheap used and came with pretty much everything you need.
Mine would have wireless connection too but if I'm going truly mobile then I'm gonna need a data plan for my phone (Y)
Anyway did some work today
Test fit and playing around with the screen position, finding a perfect spot so I would have a minimal glare on the screen.
That is just. wrong.
Viewed from the driver's seat. Screen is highly readable under the sunlight in that position surprisingly (Y)
Next: fiberglassing work and still waiting for my touch screen and GPS module. Wait its Sunday tomorrow ugh ><
Now, should I keep my head unit? Thing is, I'm gonna miss my storage pocket(s) since I keep my stuffs in there a lot.
Sweet! I thought you were saying it was too "glarey" in that position? So it's looking good then? Maybe if you recess it back a little bit, that will keep some more of the glare off of it... I like where this is going though!

I've decided to keep the headunit anyway since I love having a physical knob for volume control. I'm relocating the headunit back to the stock location, but since theres barely any room behind for anything short for the stock AM tuner, I've decided to relocate the headunit itself in the glovebox and leaving the faceplate at the stock location (Y)
Thar!

Hmm, that's very clever.
Tedious no doubt. Good job man, I like where this is going!
I've made a bezel out of an old broken laptop. I found out about this technique of plastic welding so I thought I'm giving it a try :P
Done. Sort of. All that left is some bondo work.

OMG, that Danger to Manifold pic just gave me an idea.
There's a way you can directly feed the tach signal into a serial port.
You should have a little program that runs in the tray that when you hit 5500RPM pops up that exact screen, DANGER TO MANFOLD. That would be epic win! And lols for your passengers.
this looks sick hazwan!
i love the relocated face plate, you'd think that someone would make a clip on connector to do exactly that but i guess why buy something when you can make it.
i have an old cd player that i don't have a face plate for, i think now i'm going to take it apart just for the parts like you did there lol!
dead white and blue
Hahah epic idea!
Anyway, UPDATES! Almost there....
