I meant to get this picture further up on the pipe, but it clears now, once the correct motor mount is in, it also will drop down a bit which will help.

kids modeling clay is your friend, now I have the hanger stud centers from the top of the pipes. also useful for holding on cardboard templates

this is the plate that will get welded into the cross member, I already marked it off, then drilled the holes, I put the template back on to make it easier to see when I shear off the plate

It looks like more bends behind the flex pipe, this is going to be fun, not as much room to work back there,I'll start figuring out angles, I wish there was a way to make flexible tubing hold it's shape, I could use a piece for a mockup, put it in there bend it where it needs to be bent, and copy the bends, I might just do that on this piece, all i would have to do is drop it back out, and copy the flat bends on cardboard

    Re: new s&s header

here's the cross member with it's bracing welded in, it now clears the header tubes

the bracket that hangs the header tubes on the original exhaust hanger at the back of the engine, I somehow screwed up one slot, but it will be ok

this is the section I need to duplicate, everything from the middle of the car forward is already done, I was figuring bends. it's easy, you trace out the system, find the center of each straight piece of pipe in two places, draw a line through center, and where two lines intersect, you measure with a protractor.

Ok the first part of the rear pipes is done, this was a son of a bitch to get it just right, cutting and fitting sections of stainless together. the wire ties are the best type of clamp to hold something until it's tacked. I finally got the pipes to stay without coming apart, then once they get tacked they hold their position.

    Re: new s&s header

I was going to use the factory center bracket, but apparently it took a heck of a hit somewhere in the past, no fixing this one

I made a nice bracket for the rear to hold the cherry bomb, by taking off one piece of it, it fits the center tunnel, it's off to one side in the picture, but the bracket is offset, so all I have to do is flip it around, it's grooved to hold a large worm drive clamp

Its looking good. I wish when I did my exhaust I could have used my own tools and welded it myself. It would have turned out much nicer than the crappy shop that did mine.

what i'm replacing was crappy muffler shop work, I already had replaced the center section myself, it was so bad and leaked so badly, i didn't have a choice. all the welds on it looked like piles of bird shit, I had it clamped, i had asked them to tack it and take off the clamps, they just welded the clamps right in place. the idea was to have a system with no clamps that was welded and instead i got a welded system with clamps welded in. Bunch of idiots. I do all my own fabricating, and fitting etc, but I was lucky enough to have friends who are awesome welders. this is what the rear section looks like now, the back part of it is tacked, and ready to be welded, I'm just checking fit tonight. the rear part of the system on a hatch is a SOB to make from scratch

The muffler shop threw my bracket away. I bought a new one, but I can't weld. Now it looks like this under there:

That's right, I bought a $3 dryer vent clamp from Home Depot and it's holding my exhaust together now.

is that the steel stamped bracket? I might be able to straighten this one out, its pretty badly mangled, but it's possible it could be straightened. I don't need it, If there was one in the yard i would just pull you one.

for some reason even though the pipes are all in the right position, the tips ae way off and sticking out too far, i had to go out to the plant, and do some more cutting and flaring , I think I have it fixed now, it was only the piece with the tips, the rest of the piping is perfect

    Re: new s&s header

I ended up making this hanger today to help hold the pipe up, the pipe sits on the flat part and the U bolt just keeps it from sliding around, I have to change a little of the heat shield sheet metal before it will fit.

I was having a problem with the system not lining up, it seems the problem was, when i made the system, one of the bends was off just a little,it fits fine under the car, but the bend was right where the rear hanger was, I thought I had moved the hanger out far enough, but apparently it was pulling the piping too far to one side, and causing the entire system to pivot off center.

this was the hanger bracket before

this was my solution, it moved the piping 1 inch towards the center of the car, and now everything lines up.

this one needs to be moved over slightly

this is the hanger bracket for the tips

it has a muffler, it's right in the middle, these are stainless tips. so a little metal polish and they are good to go. the muffler is the red thing, what you are looking at is the back half of the system from behind the muffler, the short piece with the really complicated bends is what goes from the header to the muffler

yep, thats what i ran before, it wasn't too bad, but of course i have the header and the performance goodies now, I really want to run the porter, but this will have to do until i can affod it, it fits in just like the cherry bomb, I'm going to use those high tech muffler band clamps to anchor the muffler connectons,so I can change the muffler really easy later.

so your not going to use a cherry?

what you plan to use...I was thinking of going with a Skunk2 myself.

this is a thrush, but it's still a glasspack, the porter is a glasspack, but they are stainless packed, and have a great sound, not as hash as the cherry bomb, with the band clamps i can change the muffler in 20 minutes. I'll run the thrush for now, then when i can afford it later i'll swap it for the porter

Okay...like I said, if that was the it that would be loud. I'm sure it still is pretty loud even with that on.

    good sounding?
