    new s&s header

ok it finally got here, a family member paid for it for my christmas present, it's sad to see a company thats been around so long go under, these are excellent headers, and look to be very well made, S&s had a very solid reputation going all the way back to '68 i believe. I got rid of the air fittings today, no point in them sticking out of the side of the header not connected to anything, I split a piece of stainless steel exaust tubing and it fit perfectly on the header tube, after cuttiing off and grinding down the two fittings, David maule migged it up for me, when this entire system is fitted and on the car, eventually i'll send these off to be Jet hot coated, they last pretty much forever that way. the paint on them never lasts. I have to make a bracket to mount to the rear exaust hanger on the engine. I'm thinking of making something to protect the tubes from road damage.

thanks, it will be nicer when it's all on the car and it's running, I was given a specific amount of money for christmas by a family member that was designated to be spend on the car, i'm supposed to send pictures of what i got with it , i would have spent it on bills but was told it was for my car only

yea it's going, it's going to be quite a while before I can afford to coat it, right now I just want to get it mounted and the brackets made etc.

the obx was 179 on egay, I have no idea how the quality is though, isn't it Chinese made? I know the s&s ones have a reputation for excellent quality. It sucks they went out of business, they've been making great headers for a long time, all of their equipment was sold off at auction last year

    Re: new s&s header

one of the pipes that came with this used to go to the converter, it's got the nice heavy flange with three bolt holes, I think I have the converter side of that flange, if I can find it, it takes the factory graphite O ring gasket, I'll put that flange on the end of the header, that way it won't have the loose flange thing from the socket rattling around on it, I could see that being an issue when being coated. If I can't find it, I'll make another identical flange and make a flat gasket like the ones used on header flange connectors. the other end will get welded to the flex coupling, when I make those, I weld three bolts right into one side of the flange, like studs

    Re: new s&s header

I KNEW I saved that converter flange for a reason, never throw out anything made of metal, FOUND IT!! and it matches the other side of the flange in the header kit, now i can use the solid flange instead of that socket joint, it uses a factory seal,

    flange from kit

factory flange, with LOVELY muffler shop welds, even lots of wire from the mig welder, this is why i hate other shops doing work,i need to cut off and clean up this mess

    working on some bends

Glad your enjoying the header, it looks good. Ill let you know if I come across another one haha. And even though its a shame the company went out of business everyone who has one should be happy, they were originally like $325 or something like that.

i assume you are still going to use a flex pipe rather than the ball joint being the end is switched

    Re: new s&s header

pictures up in a few minutes, they had to go in long enough to mark the brackets tomorrow, why they couldn't weld on a simple two hole tab at the factory,i'll never know, none of the headers for this engine have that, but it's needed to hang them under the engine, i jacked the engine up at a crazy angle off of the front motor mount, then it slid up from underneath once i rotated the dipstick out of the way

they are in for the moment to check clearances, and to figure out where the hanger bracket needs to go.

yea i'll just make a piece of angle iron with the slots like factory, once it's bolted to the hanger i can clamp it to the headers and mark them where it goes, then it gets welded on like factory, did it have a mouting tab at the font of the engine?
