this is what I packed the muffler with http://shop.steelwooldirect.com/Muff...-4-MP13X36.htm I have more pictures I will post later, he didn't have the size I needed, so he added this size specifically for me, now it's available on the site, this size will tightly pack a 3x13 core muffler

    closeup of the packing

this is the packing in the muffler, the standard procedure is to roll it as tightly as possible, then wrap the ends with paper based masking tape, this allows it to slide into the outer shell, and the tape simply carbonizes in the case, it was a very tight fit, then I had to trim the far end before hammering the tube the rest of the way down,on the end caps.

this stuff is good to 700 Celsius that's 1292 Fahrenheit

Love the concept of building your own muffler, but can I honestly ask why not buy instead? Just wondering... Looks awesome, btw!!

I was kind of wondering the same thing. A glass pack is about $25.

well after replacing about 5 glasspacks with burned out packing,, I got tired of it, after I built an entire stainless system, I just couldn't see putting a cheap glasspack on it, I had actually bought one, as you can see earlier in the thread, but took it back. This one is 100 percent stainless, from the case to the core, the only things that aren't are the end caps, but they are so heavy, they will never burn out or rust through. the packing is stainless steel wool muffler packing, this is the same stuff borla uses in their glass packs. I searched and searched on the internet, but I couldn't find what I wanted in the size I needed or the quality I wanted. at least not for less then a couple of hundred bucks.

I took a few more pictures,

this is the hanger,it normally gets a band clamp around it, I'm wanting to get one of those really nice looking clamps instead of a worm drive clamp. This used to hold the glasspack at the back, all I had to do was flip one bracket around and it holds the muffler perfectly where the cat used to go ,it does need repainting again though, the bracket is all aluminum, it's probably got 50 K plus on it already.

I'm going to use stainless walker 360 band clamps for the two connection points, they are designed to fit over the flare joint and secure with bolts, I was going to make them, for for ten bucks each, it's not worth the trouble, they are T304 stainless. I'm using two clamps so I have a point to take the system apart for work if needed.

I would love to hear your new setup if you're willing to post a short vid or sound clip. You are quite the artist.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. My current system is setup so that the "catalytic converter" (that just happens to be shaped like a glass pack) can be replaced if/when it burns out. Although with the way things are going that may not ever happen in my lifetime.

You progress is looking good though.

I need to finish the car before it runs but for all intents and purposes the exhaust system is done and on the car

I wanted to pass on that Bobby Brock, who did many of the welds on the car, passed on last week, after a year long battle with cancer, one of the best welders I've ever known and a very good friend.

    Re: new s&s header

sorry for the long delays, lots of things going on in life, and I haven't had much time to work on my car,a few updates on this,

I added the 02 sensor bung for the wideband to go in, pardon the wire hanging down, this is a burned out sensor, just using it for a mockup

I'm using these band clamps for now in the center section, later on I may change them to V bands

this is the hanger I first came up with to hold the tips, it just didnt work that well

    this is the new one

    Re: new s&s header

I used two band clamps on my exhaust because I pretty much knew I was going to add the resonator. I had a hell of a time getting my clamps to seal properly. Yours look higher quality though. I ended up needing to make shims for mine to seal the seam where the clamps come together.
