Air Box Mod?

I read earlier about someone talking about an air box modification by drilling a large hole in the box. Searching for it has come up as failure to locate.

My question is, if you built a CAI to the front bumper, would using the stock air box/filter rather than a cone filter result in better air flow etc.? I'm just curious. I thought about that the other day while sitting here, bored.

My own experience with CAI was that I just got a noisier intake with no noticeable increase in power or fuel economy. After a couple of years I removed it and put back all the original intake hardware. An intake is only part of the equation of engine modification and by itself, IMO, is a waste of money.

I too only noticed a difference in noise.

Ah. i was just curious. My stock intake system, has 3 broken vac. barbs, and a crack in the 180* piece that connects from TB to the Air box. I'm surprised at how it cracked, as it seemed nearly 1/4" thick. And the way the stock intake Y's into two smaller tubes, i feel a smooth, single inlet intake would be better than whatever it was,(Maybe they thought it was art-like) they were attempting to do out of the stock intake design.

I thought, if instead of using a cone filter, using the stock air box would help filter more air at once, and possibly prevent the rain/water/road grime from coating the filter, since the intake hole would be facing directly up...IDK though. When i get bored and feel good, i tend to wonder way, way off in my own thinking.
