    Talking The New Guy

Hey everybody!!! I am impressed. There is so much good info on this forum I don't know how you could own a 3rd gen. and not be a member. I bought a 1989 lxi coupe for a commuter a few months back for $500 with a 180,000 miles on it, replaced the clutch and been driving it ever since. I'm trying to make a fuel mileage monster out of it. I have a truck I drive on the weekends, but I'm a cheap bastard and am all about saving money where I can. So, I am looking for things I can do to make it get better mileage. Any ideas? I've done a full tune-up, removed and cleaned the fast idle valve and the IACV, replaced the fuel filter, adjusted the valves, and cleaned the air filter.

Look at the hypermiling tips for cheap no-brainers. From there, you are pretty much looking at more work and more money. Look into HHO, which is admittedly very controversial. Look into gas vaporization and various engine swaps.

One really easy thing that I want to try is an intake restrictor plate. Restricting airflow into the engine will decrease power. I suspect it will also improve mileage but I don't know.

I've also been toying with replacing glass panels with Plexiglas and steel body panels with fiberglass to reduce weight. I have yet to figure out how to fab my own fiberglass panels though, so that's a slight problem.

you can make a clay mold of the panel let it harded then remove panel do this to both sides and then it will create a cavity then bed the forms with fiberglass and go throught the steps of fiberglass bedding untill your happy with the thickness and strength

a intake restrictor plate hugh.... awesome!!! I hadn't thought of that one. Thats a good idea. I think that could work. I'll do some toying around and some research and let you know what I find out, if your interested. My car is a manual trans, do you know of any other transmissions that are compatible with our engine that may have taller gearing for better highway mileage?

The transmission from a carb. 3gee has lower gear ratios. As for an aftermarket product increasing MPG's, I don't believe in any. I would say do regular maintenance and don't be rev happy................. BTW Welcome!

    it is
it"s not necessary unless you're giving her a good run like merging into 70 mph traffic or passing a truck with a recap about to fly off lol

How about full synthetic oil, now comes in 0 weights like 0w20w, combine that with a tornado turbinator.. just kidding.

Properly inflate your tires, take off the mud terrains, lose some weight?
