Dimming the HU lights with the dash dimmer knob

Isn't the red/black cable supposed to connect the radio to the dash light dimmer? (the turning knob right to the steering wheel that allows you to dim your dashboard lighting) (1)

I've read a few threads about this and it seems to be that this cable just dims the HU when the headlights are on! (2)

Could anyone confirm which one is true?

If 2 is true (which I think it is, after my search), is it possible to connect the radio with the dash dimmer in any other way?
(I'm not really a pro electrician, as some of you might know! )

#2 is the way it works. It sounds like more effort than it's worth to make the HU have the adjustable dimming

Actually I never thought about it, but I recently built in a head unit in my friend's VW Scirocco MK2 and it dims together with the dash,
through the button. And now I'm jealous! LOL (not on his car, just on that little feature! )
