    violent shaking while braking.

at highway speeds my '88 lx will shake violently from the front left wheel, almost serious enough to make the car lose control.

does anyone know what this could be? I'm just short of jacking the car up and taking the wheel off to look but I don't really have the room for that in my driveway, and ideas? thanks.

    It could be warped rotors

I agree, but maybe not a warped rotor. Check your rotor thickness. For an LXi it should be at or above 0.75." I had to replace mine last year, finally, due to reaching their minimum thickness. After just a few thousand miles I had the dreaded pedal pulsation when really mashing down the brakes. I had the rotors resurfaced. Then, my wheel bearings began making some noises. After replacing those, the rotors have remained true. I remember my mechanic telling me several years ago that on these cars you will have trouble with rotors remaining true if your wheel bearings are worn.

My mechanic specializes in Hondas only and has been a Honda master tech since 1978.

that sounds like what's up with my car. Unfortunately I bought my car from a guy who got is from his friend for free I'm guessing. so he knew nothing about the car, so I can't decide what needs to be replaced, or rebuilt. I know it needs new wheel bearings though because it makes noises sometimes on turns. I need to get myself some 16" rims and new suspension as well as new rotors, and pads. I just don't know what to buy first...I don't even know if the timing belt is new or old or what.

I would hold off on the wheels and suspension untill you get the brakes and other essentials done. So i would do pads rotors bears and timing belt if you have alot of miles. How many miles are on the car?

yeah if you have bad wheel bearings get them replaced asap. if you dont you wil end up like what happend to me and friend and be driving on the freeway and have your wheel come off from the vibration...not a fun experience. there not that expensive so go ahead and change them !

the car has 193,400 miles approx. I know it's going to need new pads soon, I'll probably have to throw down on new rotors. I think the brake lines and all that is good because the brakes work fine there's just a lot of slack in the peddle which is why I think it needs new pads. Can I swap out the drum brakes in the back for discs? I was searching around but I couldn't figure out what parts to use or how.

how hard would you say it would be for me to do the timing belt myself? just recently there has been a squealing coming from the engine bay, I think it's a belt...maybe the timing belt, but for some reason I think it's valve tapping.

As for rear discs you will have to get rear disks from a 89 accord SEI only the sei had rear discs.

timing belts wont squeal but the teninsnor can. its not to bad at all to change id recomend picking up an electric impact gun from harbor freight and there biggest breaker bar to get the crank pully bolt off thats the hardest thing.

alright, I'm pretty sure I have a breaker bar big enough, and I'm fairly certain my dad has an impact gun laying around. if not I'll look into getting one, or borrow it from a friend.

I just finished reading the DIY weber carb conversion so I think I'm going to do that too, on top of the rear discs.

new suspension, and 16" rims, maybe 15" if I can find a set for cheap. What would be better, 15" or 16"? I'm driving on mountain roads pretty much, so clearance is preferable.

You can fit either size wheels, but bigger wheels will need tires with less sidewalk. For a reference, you could check my 'itzdave's gettin some rims' thread. I had both sizes...

alright chill, I think I'm going to go with 15" rims to get the fatter tire, better for where I live.
