sooo i played around in the driveway for a bit...

i was straightening up my interior and i stummbled across a few things.. first i figured out i have a intact tool kit from the factory.. i found my missing link.. and then behind my spare i found a CHILTONS! prolly the best thing that happened today.

but i also noticed i have a pretty intense oil leak. well not like bad but its somewhere in the vicinity of the water-neck/thermostat. it looks as its almost spraying from somewhere.. i couldnt track it down though... anybody have any ideas? and also. the kevlar tubing coming out of the air cleaner housing the one thats going to the exaust mani area.. anybody know what that is?

The tubing coming from the exhaust manifold heat shield is a warm air circulator for the carburetor. It helps regulate the intake air temperature for cold days and helps prevent carburetor icing. It's good to have on there so long as you have all the stock components of your carburetor installed.

The oil leak is probably the o-ring the part of your thermostat neck that houses the distributor gear. Either that or it's the o-ring from your distributor. The only way to replace that big-ass o-ring is to take the whole thermostat neck off, which means you also have to replace all the thermostat seals too. Oil is supposed to go into that big round chamber on the top of the housing to help keep the distributor gear lubricated. Then the other fun part is getting the timing reset on the distributor. It's not like the newer Hondas where it's keyed, so you can have it any number of teeth off.

So if you're going to replace that o-ring, you might as well give your car a full coolant flush and install a new thermostat at the same time.

And finding ALL of the gaskets can be a real bitch too. There's a thermostat seal, a thermostat o-ring, a gasket behind the housing, the o-ring on the distributor and the big distributor housing o-ring.

The last time I did mine wasn't that bad. I just made a mark on the distributor rotor so I can reinstall at the exact spot (Y). As for the gaskets.. I simply used a buncha gasket maker for them. Works fine O-rings can be had if you look hard enough.

Oh yeah, O'Reilly and NAPA should be able to get you all the gaskets. It's just that trying to describe to them what the gaskets are, and having them find them in the computer is the hardest part.

Cruel Irony... I just got finished doing the SAME thing, finding all the seals was NOT fun, (Napa did end up having what I needed though.) add to that the fact that I needed to rebuild the distributor with snagged pick and pull parts...I Hate being poor! LOL A simple carb adjustment turned into a coolant leak-complete hose replacement-seal replacement-dist.rebuild. I still need to tweak the carb! I haven't even started it yet, and plan to today, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
