    Intro and problem

    Hello all,

I was recently given an '89 Accord EX-2.0i AT by a friend. Still getting used to the AT but in general I really like the car. I guess I need the 5 posts to put up any pictures or links so I'll try to explain the problem I am facing.

On the side of the air filter is a black plastic box labelled with the number PH3-900.

It seems like one of the connections has broken off. There is a tube from the control box just flapping about and when the engine is running I can feel air being pushed out of the black box. The symptom that lead me to look about is a rough idle.

I cant seem to find this part anywhere. I guess my question is: am I doing any damage by running the car like this until I can get hold of a new part? Would it be a terrible idea to use poly-cement to stick the broken plastic piece back together in the mean time? Does anyone know of a good place to get spares (preferably in the UK)?

BTW I have been reading this forum for a few weeks and it is REALLY helpful.

    Thanks for reading

Welcome from south alabama! I don't see any harm in trying to glue it back on. I don't know much about the edm cars so that's all I can say to help. Looking forward to seeing pictures.

    Re: Intro and problem

Well, in the end it was a bit more complicated than I hoped. I decided to take out the black box and remove the broken-off connector from inside the hose so that I could glue the connector back on, only to discover that at some point in the past, someone had already done it! So the connector was totally mashed and the box and pipe had glue all over them. Anyway, we have a workshop where I work so I took the pieces in and one of the guys there helped me make a new connector and stick it on.

I have now put in the repaired part and all seems to be well again

Nice fix, good thing you had a shop to work with.

Nope that didnt work. Glue not strong enough. Back to the drawing board for a second attempt. Gonna epoxy a new piece in and make it insert further into the box. Guess I'll find out tomorrow once the epoxy is cured.

You definitely need to post a picture of the said connector. It's a vacuum line that's broken off right?

    Re: Intro and problem

    Thanks for the welcome everyone

Yeah, it turns out to have been a really good gift! I wasnt that bothered when I first saw it but I definitely intend to keep this car going now I have it.

The Euro cup has turned out to be a pretty good tournament so far with a fair few good games.

This is post 4 so one more and I'll put up the pics. The epoxy I have put on makes it look like a cake with a candle in.

I think the real root of the problem is that the hose is too stiff (maybe stiffened with age?) and pulls on the connector. I'm guessing that this is what broke it first time and second time. So I have got some hose from work and will replace that too if I can.

    Here is my 'fix'

There still seems to be a bit of a problem with the idling but I will go out for a drive and see how it is after a few miles on the motorway.

    Re: Intro and problem

Well, that was not fun. Just tried to drive around with my 'fixed' car and it was worse than ever. I'm not sure the part I repaired had anything to do with the problems I have been experiencing.

    Basically:

The car has a rough idle. It also only sometimes responds to me pressing the accelerator and then responds in a very jumpy fashion with surges and then low power. It is worst at low speed esp. when pulling away, but I can feel it even when I have got up to a reasonable speed. It also stalls some times and has trouble starting up.

From reading around this sounds like maybe a spark plug problem? Any thoughts?

    Re: Intro and problem

Can your friend tell you anything about its maintenance history? Checking spark plugs is certainly worthwhile. Also, check plug wires; a simple test is to watch the engine running in the dark. If any faulty plug wires are allowing a spark to jump from the wire to another part (when spark is en-route to the plug), the spark might be visible in the dark.

You might also take the distributor cap off and inspect it and the rotor inside. Also, I suggest putting some fuel injector in a tank of gas. Can't guarantee any of this will help but good things to do anyway.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Check timing too.

    Re: Intro and problem

It turns out there were 2 problems at the same time.

I replaced the faulty sparkplug and its wire and that sorted the really bad stuff out - the stalling, loss of power etc...

But the car still idled roughly, so I reconnected the piece I made to the vacuum system and that sorted the rough idle.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy to have the car running again - I am moving house this weekend!

    Cheers for help and thoughts
