    Question auto trans adjustment ?

Sometimes when I put my car in park it would lurtch ahead like it wouldn't catch park.I checked the manual how to adjust it but it's still in reverse when shifter is in park.I've searched but didn't find any help.Should I pull the shift cable back before trying to adjust, can anyone help.

When you put it in neutral is it in neutral? This something new?
I don't want to tell you wrong info so clarify .
You said it wanted to lurch foward in park yet you say its in reverse, would'nt that lurch backwards?

It wanted to lurge ahead in park sometimes, but I would pull it down to low and then push it back into park and it would be fine. That's why I decided to adjust it which I thought wouldn't be too hard but I guess I was wrong!

Why is it still in reverse when the shifter says park? All my gears are correct except I have reverse in R and P on the shifter.

    Re: auto trans adjustment ?

Does the shifter align properly when say in drive or neutral?

I saw three tiny little lines close to where the gear indicator is that match a mark in the selector. One mark is in neutral, and when in there both the shifter and the mark close to the indicator match. I have not read anything about that, but that may be a way to adjust the transmission cable.
If it ain't broke... I fix it!

Could the park mechanism be worn, how does the cable come out of the trans.

    Re: auto trans adjustment ?

I always put the shifter in neutral, jack up the front of the car off the ground, set the E brake, Check that the transmission is indeed in neutral without any binding at all in the shifter and shift cable. Neutral is a good mid point to make sure the two coincide, which is why I asked about neutral.
It sounds like you may have a damaged cable, probably from exhaust heat or exhaust work.
There is a small access cover on the transmission where you access the cotter pin that will allow you to slide the end of the cable out from a round dowel type pin. You should never need to mess with that part unless you're replacing the cable.

You should be able to adjust the shifter from inside the car, under the console. It is in the download manual here.
It isn't the park pawl if you can still jam it in park like you said earlier.
    This may help

Once you get the cover off the shifter inside the car, look at where the cable comes in from under the car. You should see a fat horrseshoe shaped lock pin that holds end of the cable to the piece sticking out from the shifter. Put the car in D, remove that pin but make sure you don't move the transmission out of D because you may need to jiggle the shifter some to get the pin out so it could put the shifter slightly out of D. This is important because now you need to move the adjuster there so the hole in it lines up perfectly with the hole in the cable end. Doesn't matter which hole on the shifter shaft end you use, they are the same distance, you just need the cable end to line up there which should put the shifter in proper adjustment. Pop the horseshoe clip pin back on and your done.

    Re: auto trans adjustment ?

Yes I have read the procedure in the online manual, did what it said.I disconnected the cable and pulled shifter down to d2,pulled the cable all the way out.I then slowly pushed the cable back in counting the clicks and I end up being one click short. So I guess that is why I can't get park.Maybe if I take the cable off the trans I can see if there is something wrong on that end.

    Re: auto trans adjustment ?

Thats why i said make sure you have the trans end in the same gear youre adjusting it to. If you cant get it there then the cable must have a problem. See if you can go the other way adjusting it and get any more closr to park.

    Re: auto trans adjustment ?

I have experienced this sort of thing before on a terra-gator. The shifter cable is just a braided cable, when one of the strands breaks it can cause the shifter to bind. You can pull it all the way back but when you push it forward the cable binds up inside the casing and it doesn't come all the way ot on the trans side even though it goes all the way in on the shifter side. One thing you could do is un hook both sides and move the cable by hand. If it binds, then you know what the problem is.

    Re: auto trans adjustment ?

Thanks guys,I moved the cable by hand with the car running to neutral .I then moved the shifter to neutral with adjuster over the cable, then tightened the nut.I haven't had chance to check it but will tomorrow.I'll let you know what happens.
