Is detailing worth the price? (Los Angeles 81 Accord)

Howdy, I have a 1981 Honda Accord 4-door that didn't pass the Communist California smog last year and it's been sitting in the garage for a year. This weekend I took it to the mechanic smog repair shop and it should get passed the tyrannical People's Republic of California legal extortion requirements.

After one year in the garage of my building it's really dirty. I intend to get it washed the best I can when I get it out of the shop and was considering having it detailed. I was wondering if it's worth the cost. The local Honda dealership charges around $180 which is quite a lot, I'm just wondering if they do anything special to charge that much or if it's the usual dealership overcharge.

How is detailing better than the regular car wash, I never had a car detailed before, so I'm curious.

I've never had one either but I think it involves more than just a car wash. I think it involves a car wash, wax, rims and tires, and cleaning the interior but $180 seems a too much.

Dr. Snooz, That seems like a lot of work, I'll look for a place that does it for less money, though. Thanks guys.

By the way...I'm getting some rust spots on the roof. I guess I'm going to have to take it to a body shop!

I think the only time I would get detailing done is if I wanted someone togive the old rubbing compound treatment to give my paint a new life.

I know, I read some of your troubles with those commies. I really want to move out of California. Unfortunately it's not likely right now.

EDIT: Why are all the posts in reverse order? Now when I see them, the original one is on the bottom of the page.

Doing some minor/partial detailing every time you wash the car helps it to not be such a chore when you decide to fully detail yourself. For example, you could just claybar a different panel each time you wash the car. On the exterior side, detailing is basically just various amounts of claybaring, polishing, waxing, Tire Bath+Shine, Rim deep clean/polish, trim restoration and in some cases also headlight restoration and engine bay cleaning.

LOL. Sorry to burst your bubble, but nobody out there wants your car to look better than you do. The less you pay, the less they care. Take pride in your car and do the detail yourself. Save your money for a Weber swap or something cool.
