Haha sorry I've been busy with stuff but here are some updates!

Why bother welding a patch on top of a rusted out metal really? What are you trying achieve here, dumbass?

practice makes perfect just practice on lots of scrap steel, maybe some thicker stuff to get the hang of it at first so you don't get frustrated and just blow holes everywhere in thin stuff lol

    Re: 1979 Accord Restomod

I have a MIG welder with gas myself, sounds best for thin sheet metal but the heat will still give distortion if not used carefully. Regular fees for the gas bottle rental even if you don't use it but useful to have around.. Preludes rust more than Accords.. Honda Z much worse.. my Lancias have a little & their parts cars are terrible...
A previous owner or "repairer" of one my Preludes had evidently used old fashioned ox-acetelene welding and made a right mess of it; looks like that requires real skill.
I didn't have too many problems teaching myself MIG welding though my cheap welders sticky, inconsistent wire feed can be VERY annoying and anything less than perfectly clean metal creates problems too

I had a very quick hunt on RetroRides for suggestions...obviously there're plenty more.

And there's always these threads for inspiration:
    Making Panels...
Too far gone or do-able?????? mk 5 2.3 cortina
    1979 chrysler sunbeam gls no.294
1967 Osi 20M TS - needs a bit of welding!!
    Some are quite epic.
You know they're used to rust! If not slightly mad.

Panels with rusty reinforcement panels underneath like most of those can be a pain for the rust returning unless you can get those internal surfaces really clean & rust-free though.. I have to re-do my Preludes cowl panel again because the little wiper-pivot mounting panel/reinforcement under the outer panel had rust in the joint between them.

Thanks for the tips and links! That is very helpful (Y)

idk I still gotta decide if I'm gonna get one at the moment. I know for sure that I would be using them more in the future but ahhhhh decisions!

    LOL this looks familiar:

Before the primer you should do a chemical to the bare metal treatment to avoid rust.

I use a phosphoric acid based product. Then you can be sure no rust will bubble under the shiny new paint in your right front door.

The treatment gives enhanced rust protection. I have treated a 1969 mustang 10 years ago. The car is bare metal, no paint in the exterior and sitting outside in the rain all this time. No rust whatsoever. Is pretty amazing.

Here we have a local brand, but you just need to ask for a de-rust treatment based on phosphoric acid, there's lot of brands selling that stuff.
A rapid googling found me this results for NZ.

Tergo rust remover and metal conditioner:

Non-acid product (never tried this stuff myself):

    Re: 1979 Accord Restomod

Had the car back from the shop since last week but never got around doing much to it. Been busy with other customer cars.

Managed to put some rust protection/bondo on the welded areas.

I'm gonna have to use fiberglass on smaller/non critical rust spots since getting the whole car welded back is costing too much and the owner refused to do it (N)
