What's up, man?
In order to use those Bose speakers, you need the Bose amp, and I believe the head unit. The speakers are 1 ohm if I remember correctly, and will most likely damage an amp not designed for it. You don't want to blow your internal amp, especially if you have a working OEM tape deck. If you don't mind the lack of a CD player, it's not a bad option. I have one I plan on modding so we can use stock radios in restorations, but have inputs and maybe even pre-amp outputs.

Then I'm clearly mistaken on the impedence of the Bose speakers. I do know that the custom enclosure they sit in is wonderful, especially because it's a nice ported enclosure.

Yeah, this sound system was designed back when Bose engineered the entire system to the acoustics of the car. These are very similar drivers to what you would find in the mid-level Bose studio speakers of the time. They used the drivers in a folded transmission line in the big boys, but they used only a single driver per channel in these cars. I haven't measured an enclosure, because I wasn't interested in them at the time when I had a set, but I'd imagine the enclosures are tuned to provide a good mid-bass boost.
I'd really like to get my hands on the whole setup again. If I did, I would mod the deck like I said above with an aux-in with a cable running into the console, perhaps connected to a tablet that's molded into the tape bin.

In all reality, not much. The enclosures are tuned for these cars, so they wouldn't sound right in others. The drivers might be worth $5 or so each as replacement drivers, but that's about all. I can't recall if there's a crossover of any sort in the enclosure.
As a whole unit, most people simply discard them around here. I don't really get it. They're much better than half of the junk people stick in cars these days. You don't need 12 tweeters, you just need an extended range driver with the right EQ and tuning, which is what the Bose setup is.

I like just a pair of mid basses in the back. I have a pair of 8" woofers that I'm considering back there. That should give me just enough bass to be satisfied, but it won't eat into my trunk space because they will be deck mounted.
