How would I check for that?
You might consider downloading the manual from the wiki and following the troubleshooting diagram for the VSS.

From what I remember the part on the transmission only drives the speedo cable and power steering variable assist pump, the actual VSS signal comes out of a part in the gauge cluster

Sounds like your pluser is bad. It's the box that the signal gets an sends it to Ecu
