    My 1987 Accord GSi

    Hi Folks,

Thought I'd get some piccys up of my Accord. These were all taken up at the compound where I stored it briefly, and the car hasn't had a wash in a few years - apologies! Had a bash at removing the bumper sticker too, was slow going so I've left it for now. Will give the car a proper clean once it's MOT'd and home safe

Was a bit of an interesting drive getting it to the garage as the car is in desperate need of a wheel balance and new tyres! The DOHC lump pulls like a train though, and sounds fantastic - can't wait to get her out on the road properly and see what she can do!!
    Cheers,
    Josh

Not quite.. This one is an 87 gold top engine. Mines is an 88 black top. quite a few differences in them under the bonnet.. I miss driving mines, and it wont see the road for a few years till the restoration is done..

Hmmmm.... Id swap you my 2001 accord for your 1987 accord Josh...

Cheers for your comments guys she's not for sale at the moment though, I don't think I'll ever have a car quite like this one again so I'm going to be making the most of it for the time being.

That's interesting to hear - mines got a B20A2 in it, what's the black top engine? I'd be interested to know what the differences between the cars are

Hmmm I might pass on the 6th Gen as I already have one currently transplanting a JDM H22A into it amongst other random things, although I've stopped for winter now.

Now your S2000 on the other hand...
    Cheers,

    Re: My 1987 Accord GSi

Def a lovely accord you have, I hope you keep it OEM as yours is the third 2.0i 16v that I know of in the UK, then I have one in Ireland(was uk reg,) that's the only one here that I know of, apart from a few in mainland europe.. keep me in mind if you are ever gonna part direction, I love these cars, ill make room for another B20A accord. ha. the s2000 is right up there with the accord, id be hard pushed to part with it right now.. ha

I think the differences is more along the lines of a facelift, except under the hood away from main view. Still got a B20A2 in the '88, but the cam cover is a different colour. I think the gold tops had a bit more power and torque. the update in 88 made them more environmentally or something.. I think there is some mild cam and compression differences between the 87 and 88.. there is a B20A8 for some markets but that engine is for a car running a CAT.
I did have a gold top accord last year that I had to scrap due to a bad case of rust so I stripped it first. almost everything I took off apart from the suspension and brakes is different between the 87 B20 accord and the 88 B20 accord. the ABS pumps different. think gearbox code is different, the ECU on the 88 accord is half the size, the lights on the 87 dash cluster have writing compared to symbols on the 88... the back seats don't fold down on the 87, but do on the 88... there is a space saver wheel on the 88, but a 5th alloy for the 87 accord, and two foam paddings on each side of boot to raise up floor level due to the bigger spare wheel... The front engine mount also bolts to the block different.... my 87 accord had colour coded door mirrors, but the 88 the mirrors is black.. I see yours is also black so don't know if my 87 mirrors had been painted at some stage. that's all the differences I know at top of my head...

Is that a prelude engine your droppin in there? is it a straight swap? Was thinking on doing that to my accord, the 1.8 is very under powered after driving the s2000. I was keeping an eye on the ads for a crashed type r going for handy money and doing something similar to what you are doing there.

    Re: My 1987 Accord GSi

Cheers Guys I never realised there'd be so much interest in this car I doubt I'll be parting ways with it for a long time though, I've only done about 30 miles in it so far but I can honestly say this car is one of the best drives I've ever had. This is coming from a man who sells brand new Hondas for a living!!

As for plans with this car, I'll be keeping it as OEM as possible. I'd like to lower the suspension and change the wheels for something a bit easier to find tyres for, other than that I'll be keeping it in it's original state. I'll probably upgrade the audio as well, but you can't see the speakers so no drama there. Glad to hear the gold top is nice and powerful by the way, that's never a bad thing Are you going to transplant your old gold top into the current Accord?

Yeah that's the engine from a BB4 Prelude going into the Accord. I was told it was a straight swap, however for this block/chassis combo it isn't. I think as there have been many revisions of the H22A over the years the people who informed me may have gotten confused... Main problem I'm having is that the passenger side engine mount doesn't fit, the Accord fuel line isn't compatible with the Prelude fuel rail and the Prelude and Accord utilise different OBD standards so I'm going to have to splice together the looms at some point I think the H22A5 would be a direct fit into your Accord provided your car is OBDII, however the H22A5 runs lower comp than the H22A and so only puts out 185PS compared to 200PS on the older block. I will get my Accord finished this summer hopefully, or sooner if I manage to move to a house with a garage in the near future.

Going back to my 3G, the tyres seem to be warped - I've not got access to the car currently but understand that I need 185/70R13's, can somebody confirm this? If that's right, I'm having a nightmare finding reasonably priced tyres currently!!

    Cheers,
    Josh

    Re: My 1987 Accord GSi

Im glad you enjoyed your drive.. The power steering is unreal slick for a car of this age. you can turn the wheel with your little finger for parking then the faster you go the less assisted the steering becomes... How did you come across the car? did you have it is storage for a few years??

I know the accord has a weird tyre size. I did see them on camskill.com for reasonable money. I will need to check tomorrow morning what the exact size is from the sticker in the door sill. They are a pretty high side wall on them and they are definitely 14 inch not 13 inch wheels.

OEM is good.. If you plan on changing the suspension I will be interested in the original springs you have. I found mines has two broken springs, and as I want to keep everything OEM I wan the correct spring rate for it aswell, I want to stay away from springs from a motorfactors if I can help it.

I don't think I will swap the motor over. I'm returning mines to showroom condition where possible, so that will mean the engine block number will need to match the number on the chassis plate.. If I find a cheap ex accord I might consider putting in gold top.

That's a lot of work you are doing to your 6g. I know mines isn't OBD2 cause I couldn't find a diagnostic port anywhere. I reckon a damaged type r will do the trick for transplanting everything across.. they have 220bhp and getting cheaper to come across.

    Re: My 1987 Accord GSi

I've dropped off the radar recently, apologies! I was tied up with moving to a house with more space for cars/me & the gf & the dog etc. plus I bought a couple of other cars which have been keeping me busy - amongst them another GSi (albeit a Prelude!).

At any rate I put 'new' wheels on my Accord the other day. They are genuine Enkei's, although on removing my stock alloys I discovered that the OEM wheels were Enkei's too!

At any rate, some pictures for you all:

Nice to see your keeping the car in good nick..

Although i prefer the original wheels. If you fancy selling on the original alloys let me know.

Oh, quick question and why do you call your accord a GSi? they are in the honda brochure as the 2.0i 16v, should be on the log book aswell... Thought GSi was to do with rover...

    Re: My 1987 Accord GSi

Cheers mate. Doing the best I can to look after her, although the general public don't help, careless car park incidents appear to have been happening sadly

The original wheels were alright, but I felt a special car deserved some special wheels. The originals aren't for sale I'm afraid, they're currently on my Prelude GSi as I bought it without wheels lol.

As for the 'GSi' bit, the info is a bit thin on the ground. My logbook states it's an Accord GSi, as do a couple of bits of documentation in the owner's folder from Honda. Honda also refer to it as just an 'Accord DOHC' in the original sales documentation too, so there's some more confusion but there is no reference to the '2.0 i16' name whatsoever in the original sales documentation, that much is clear.

My understanding is that the early models fitted with gold top engines were referred to as GSi's in line with the second generation Preludes with B20 engines. The 3rd Gen Preludes then came in shortly after, around the same time as the black top B20's started being fitted to Accords, and to keep the branding coherent across the range of cars the Accords started being referred to as being '2.0 i16' models like the 3rd B20 fitted Preludes. I guess it also helps with making the distinction between the facelift and post facelift cars as well, but who knows.

Like I said though, evidence is very piecemeal so it's hard to make any solid conclusions. I'm just going by the paperwork and what little info there is available
    Cheers,
    Josh

    Re: My 1987 Accord GSi

You have sound logic.. I had a gold top accord but the irish log book for it did not have the trim level written in book. hell it didnt even record the right chassis number. lol. the black top i got has 2.0i 16v writtin in its UK reg book. I have a catalogue from 1988 and the accord in that picture was the 2.0i 16v.

Only comparable difference that i can notice to the outside of the car to the "facelift" model is that the wing mirrors arent painted on the black top models where as they are on the gold top.

there is alot of under bonnet differences in the two cars though. gearbox has a different code, front engine mount is different. ALB system is completly different. The icons on the dash cluster is different.. and ECU is much smaller on the newer model. thats all i can think on on top of my head.
