    Stalling makes me angry....

Hey guys, having a bit of an issue.

Finally getting everything ready to go on my 88 DX sedan. Went to start it and it wouldn't start. Realized it was out of gas. Put a couple gallons in and it would start and immediately stall.

Realized the throttle stop screw was waaaaay too far out. Screwed it in as far as I could and it started and stayed running. Cool, right?

Went to drive it around a bit, and as soon as the temp gauge started to go up, the car stalled. Would start if I pump the pedal, but then stalled. Now it seems it will start and stay started for a couple minutes, and then will stall after warming up.

I don't /think/ the primary cut-off slow mixture solenoid valve (or whatever) is bad, but I haven't checked it. Plan to tomorrow. Also I will change the rear fuel filter, as I haven't changed that yet. I am fairly sure that the idle mixture is off, but the manual assumes that the vehicle will stay running once the engine has warmed up in order to perform the procedure, which is exactly my problem.

    Any suggestions?

I'm guessing your fuel pump may have burned out. On a few cars I know of if the pump runs with no fuel in it. Even for a short period of time it will burn out. This explains the idle but no rev. The car is starving for fuel and cant get any so it stalls. But I'm still a noob to these cars so I could be WAY off.

It actually is a new fuel pump. I hear it turn on and everything. Also a new fuel relay. Also, don't think the pump is burned out, as it works fine when the engine hasn't warmed up yet.

As far as I know, it is the original carb. I have a kit for it, I just haven't built up enough gumption to actually rebuild it. I was going to grab one from the junkyard, but there was only one last time I went, and it was missing pieces. Same with the distributor too actually.

I did find out that the cut-off solenoid wire doesn't seem to be getting power, though, so that may really be the problem. It is missing its wire harness though - the previous owner just taped it together and it keeps coming loose. It is in a really hard place to get to in order to repair it, but it doesn't seem to be getting power even that far, if I'm following the diagnostic procedure correctly.

Okay, fixed the wire for the cut-off solenoid. Also went ahead and checked my valve lash and they were all a little tight, so I adjusted them. Put everything back together and now it starts and stays running. Yay! However, now it idles s00per high and diesels a bit when I turn it off. I probably got the idle adjustment way off now for trying to fix it that way before.

    Baby steps.
