1000-1100rpm, ecu blinks 17, need input...

My 89 lxi has had a high idle giving me shitty mpg lately. I have cleaned and replaced idle valves, replaced vac lines, seafoam through the intake mani, full tune up and adjusted the idle screw with no change in my problem.

I was told the 17 blinks means speed sensor is bad. Well the needle on my mph reads wrong any way, going 40 dash reads 60, going 60 it jumps way up to reading 90!(i use my phone app to tell me what im actually doing). So only after the car sits all night will it idle like it should untill I go above 45-50mph to a full stop the idle will stick to the 1000+ range.

any input will help. Im fed up and cant keep paying for the gas it eats. very close to pulling the engine and trans then crush the body...keep the powerplant for my 2g lude, but that means my nice restored barn queen will be my dd. I dont like that idea...

Sounds like the speedometer cable is bad, but the sensor could be bad. Does the cruise control set?

Have you resolved the code 17 yet? If not, proceed through the troubleshooting sequence in the manual to see what the problem is.

Manual is here: 1989 USDM Honda Accord Factory Service Manual

    Troubleshooting begins on p. 12-38.

The cruise comes on but wont set. Im going to change the fast idle valve on the front of the intake manifold with one I got at the salvage yard. Cleaned of course, and off a lower mile motor. Crossing fingers.

I would fix the code first. Make sure the cable is fully seated in both housing ends.

Cleaned up a replacement fast idle valves/sensors fixed code 17. Now I have to clean up the egr and clean up the intake with a can of seafoam.

The idle valves fixed your speedo? That doesn't make any sense.

Im going to be buying an ecu off a non emissions fi a20a4. Think this is my best option besides purchasing egr part. Unless a member wants to sell me a working egr solinoid and possible working egr cheap!

Re: 1000-1100rpm, ecu blinks 17, need input...

If the egr valve tests good, 86 and 87 lxi had a problem were the EGR chamber (white plastic can with 3 ports) inside the black emmissions box on the firewall would get plugged up causing a code 12. I'm not sure if 88 and 89 are setup the same way. If you follow the EGR tests in the manual, it might fail on one of the vacuum tests. Anyway the fix was to remove it and clean it. I used carb cleaner on mine, but it's probably not the best for plastic.
