    Sleepy brakes

I've got an automatic, and when I'm in drive w/ brake on at a red light, the brake seems to slowly sink to the floor, and the car moves foward and the wheels creak, as if the brakes' ability are wearing off the longer I hold them down. I've just been putting it in neutral while at intersections, but I'd like to know if this is normal and if so what do I do while I'm waiting for an eternity for a light to change? Just sit there with the brake in the floor or what?
