    EK1 gasket on EL1 engine

    Hello guys!

I'm having a little trouble with my SJ5... When I hit the gas with an heavy foot a white smoke comes out fr the exhaust and sudden disappears
I was thinking that it could be an bad valve seal, since I have 1 piston leaking compression... But white smoke generally speaking is a bad head gasket allowing the entrance of water in the cylinder, right? Buuut the water and the oil levels are still and they do not get up or down

So I've searched on the web looking for an complete gasket set, and the news is I didn't find anything specific for the EL1 engine...
But I've found thousands of gasket sets for the EK1 and I eas eondering if they would fit the EL1 engine.
Another day Hazwan told me that a few guys was using EL1 headers on EK1 block to get rid of the CVCC system, so I think they might fit, right?

    Thanks!

Note: sorry if I made any grammatical error, google translate is for weaks haha

Yeah, I am pretty sure that the EL and EK head gaskets are the same. People do interchange the heads between the blocks, and the cylinders have the same bore. You should be just fine!

A little white smoke might just be some condensation in your exhaust system though. Especially if the car is cold and warming up.

Does the smoke smell like burning coolant? If so your head gasket is gone. If the smoke smells like gas it's running too rich.

The smoke comes out even with the warm engine... :/

Smells like gas, and the cylinder without compression, when I installed new spark plugs the one inside that cylinder was all black.....
So I really don't know what is happening ....
I'm thinking on getting new spark cables...mine is very bad
But anyway I'll open the engine just to make sure that no coolant is getting inside the cylinder

If the smoke smells like burning gas or oil and your coolant is staying at the same level your rings are bad and the oil blow-through is causing the smoke when it burns in the chamber. This also explains the lack of compression since the car needs good rings to get a good seal, without that seal there's no compression. Sounds like you'll be needing to do a head gasket and rings.

Oh crap... Now I'm almost sure that is my piston rings...... I ' m using a thickee oil and the smoke reduced to almost zero...
    New question
What piston rings I can use?

I used DNJ standard size rings and they fit with no modification.

Re: EK1 gasket on EL1 engine

I only found some ITM ones selling , here is some links:

Honda Accord Prelude Piston Ring Kit 79 83 | eBay

    79 81 Honda Accord Prelude 1 7 EK1 SOHC Pistons Rings Set | eBay

Honda Accord Civic Piston Ring Set 75 79 | eBay

    ITM Pistons Ring Set 4 Std 79 83 Honda Accord 79 82 Prelude 1 8L 1751cc | eBay

The thing that is killing me is the 50 bucks shipping... oh god why so expensive? ...

Since the EL1 and the EK1 have the same bore, I think the pistons and the rings are the same , doesn't ?

And if I need to rebuild my block I didn't should buy some 0.50 or .20 pistons and rings?

Thanks for all the help PDXAccord79

And sorry for my bad english again japanese is so much easy haha
    ありがとうございます。(Thank you very much)

You only should need to get bigger rings if you need to bore the cylinders. If the cylinder walls still look good, and have no deep scratches, you should be fine with just doing a hone, and using the standard size rings. If you bore, you have to get oversize pistons and rings to match.

Re: EK1 gasket on EL1 engine

I think I will rebuild the block and get new oversize cylinders, just to make sure that I won't have problems for a long time

Now back to the thread subject

    These kits are good?
Honda Prelude Accord Head Gasket Set 79 80 | eBay

Honda Prelude Accord Full Gasket Set 79 80 | eBay

79 81 Honda Accord Prelude 1 7L EK1 Complete Head Gasket Set Free Shipping | eBay

I'm thinking if they will fit the EL1 engine...

Take the car apart and take the block to a machine shop before you do anything. They will check to see if you need to bore or not. If you don't need it don't do it. This isn't a performance bore, it just puts the cylinders back in round.

I'd be pretty sure EL & EK would share rings since the blocks & cylinder bore were shared, but not so sure about the pistons themselves.
A friend used '82-3 EL Accord pistons in his '80 EL many years ago since it have a slightly higher compression ratio, 9.0:1 instead of 8.5:1 or something like that.

Hmm , where can I find these EL pistons? Or the original ones?
On ebay it's being very hard to find :/

I'm thinking on put a D16Z6 on it if I don't find these piston and piston rings....

    Thanks for the help guys

Pull your pistons and look at them first, they might be fine after cleaning. As long as there's no flat spots on the sides they should be fine.
