once again... sub enclosure in spare tire space...

I was taking my spare tire out today to get rid of the measly 15 pounds or whatever it is...lol.. and I was thinking about that age old question... How hard would it be to make a custom enclosure for a single 12inch sub in there... it looks like enough room.. I think making the box would be somewhat challenging... I would love the space though... and my dual sub box is freakin heavy... hmm... any ideas...

here is what i think you should do. get a nice bid sub and turn it upside down and make it flash with a floor. the dip in the trunk will should be enough to push air around and the rest of the trunk should work like a big box.
that is what i was thinking a long time ago.

ohhh... Alex... so were you thinking of drilling the actual sub upside down to the bottom of the trunk???? so you mean with a free flow sub... you would have to get the kind that dont need to be enclosed... is that what you were talking about?

Jigga... I thought about fiber glass too... thats probably the most effecient way .. I dont know how to work with it either.. I wonder where you could go to see about custom molding....

Fiberglass is actually pretty easy to work with (I built a small boat with it a couple years ago). All you need is some fiberglass cloth and some epoxy or polyester resin. Basically, you just lay the cloth down and coat it with the resin, and keep putting more and more layers down. If you want it to look nice, it takes a lot more effort and materials than that, but if you were to just fill in the spare tire well using it, and then use a thick piece of mdf on top to mount the sub on, than the fiberglass wouldn't have to look nice.

I never thought about that, how strong is the spare tire well? In other words, will it handle the pressure of a sub withought flexing? (I've never looked that closely at it)

yeap that is what i was thinking. turn it upside down and let it sit by it self in the miffle of the trunk. putt amps around it and make it look nice.

Ok, as promised, here are the pics.
    1. Masked the hole trunk with newspaper, lined spare tire well with tin foil so fiberglass doesn't stick to trunk. Used about 3 layers of fiberglass matting and resin.

    2. Mold out of the trunk and trimmed
    http://www.geocities.com/tvouthilak/.../fiberbox2.jpg
    3. Next step is to make some wooden rings and prop them up with some dowels and hot glue. An alternative is to just cut out a big piece that will fit over the whole mold and cut out the speaker holes, holes for ports and terminal cups..

    4. This is what it looks like after stretching speaker grill cloth over the whole mold and covering it with 2-3 layers of matting and resin. Plus, the holes are cut out for the subs and ports.

    5. This is the box after a little sanding and speaker terminals installed.

    6. Test fit with subs installed.
    http://www.geocities.com/tvouthilak/.../fiberbox6.jpg
    7. Final install with layer of dynamat covering box and trunk, but no carpet yet. http://www.geocities.com/tvouthilak/.../fiberbox7.jpg

.....copy and paste link into address bar.....

    Enjoy!!!

    Peace out...

wow that looks really good 89accordlxi...

DXHATCHBACK: you would need a sealed enclosure.. as in air tight... I was thinking about making a mold w/ fiber glass that would attach/seal to a piece of MDF that would sit flat as the trunk bottom...

You have to right click on the links, go to properties, then copy and paste that link.
