    Instrument Cluster Removal. Done!

I have removerd the dreadful cluster from my 83 and now am read yto diagnose the malfunctioning fuel gauge and temp gauge. Neither of them work the Gas gauge light used to above 6 months ago but that was it. I am having no luck locating the circuit diagrams in the chilton. Anyone have any info they could give this way. Advice would be much appreciated! Per ushee picys!

So, I know that those two gauges are powered and grounded on the same circuit. I think if you have a bad ground though, the ground goes through the gauge and they will peak out and then eventually burn out and no longer work. Was there ever a time when they were both gone up to max?

If I were you, I'd pick up one of these: Accord Honda Car Service Manual 1983 | eBay

I'm not sure if there was a separate electrical troubleshooting manual for 83 or not. But I know there was one for 1984.

This is from the 1984 Manual. But it should be pretty damn close, if not identical.

When i purchased the vehicle, neither gauge functioned. The fuel light worked but only for a few weeks.. The owner noted that there was an electrical "fire" under the hood. I can see some wires were re loomed and replaced, but never investigated which ones fried. I have a feeling the two gauges were within this circuit and youll see by the pictures.... The

I think your best bet is to swap both gauges in a known working junkyard piece. Repairing them might be possible but its probably gonna be inaccurate or even work at all.

If you're going to geek out on your car (and pulling your dash apart to rewire the gauges is definitely geeking out), the OE Honda manual is the only way to go.

I've found the gauges are like soap bubbles. Touch 'em and they pop. I think your only real solution is to keep scavenging the yards until you find a 2g. In the mean time, keep a Christmas list of all the happy parts you need to get when you find one. You can also keep an eye on eBay to see if something comes up there.

    Re: Instrument Cluster Removal. Done!

    Here we go more pictures!!!

I installed the cluster the same day i did the booster and master cylinder. Just because I couldnt wait to see if i would finally have a working fuel gauge!!

the pictures again, I will do my best to put them in a chronilogical order from installation. The replacement went verywell other than the small fact that i didnt notcie that this cluster must have come from a 5 speed and did not have the panel in the center for telling you which gear you were engaged in on an automatic transmission, So i had to do some minor modifications.. you will see in the pictures. I had to do a mad swap from the original cluster to the new old cluster. I also managed to drop 50K miles over night which was jdm-tastic!

    Enjoy!!

Nice work! So the old gauges were just dead eh? Cool you were able to adapt the auto-position thingy to the new gauges.

Thank you, yeah i didnt even notice it didnt have it untill iinstalled it.As you see it in the pictures i was getting ready to put it in the dash then i realized it was missing something. Duhhh! Yeah it was as snap in component i just drilled the hole for the connector. in the back. my question to all is where does you normal operating temperature stand at. Mine is like a quarter of the way up when sitting in stopped traffic after driving around for awhile. I replaced my radiator bc it had a leak to fixed the minor overheating problem, it was at like 3/4 way up before. Is it normal to be 1/4 up. Isee these two small dots tucked away the cover thinking they are reference points for operating temp.Anyone know?? You cansee the dots in some of the close up pictures.

On my 79 the fan kicks in 1/4 of the way up on the temp gauge every time so that sounds right.
