Extended Top Hats and such- Cheddasauto

Thanks for looking at this thread and I apologize for not being very active over here. I am starting to get more in-depth with the 3Geez crowd on Facebook and I am planning on making some really cool parts right away.

First of all I am going to start with Extended Top-Hats. These ones will be CNC machined from 6061 Aluminum, and will allow for 1" of total extra travel. By allowing this extra shock travel, the internal assembly will have more time to set-up, which will help prevent bottoming, something that anyone who is lowered 2" or more knows it is quite a problem. These a simple functionable solution to a common problem. The ones I am making will allow the use of stock or upgraded bushings like Energy. Prices will be $150 shipped if we can get 5 purchasers, or $135 if we can get 10 sets sold. So far we have 4 people signed up. They will also include new hardware for mounting, with extended studs for strut bar attachment.

    Group buy:

    Martin Ortega
    Jason Hashman
    Alex Taylor
    Richard Thompson
    Jesse Hernandez-Flores (messyhonda)

    See below for photos:

    CNC render

Here is a good photo of the ones I already make for the civic/crx and integras. These ones are laser cut, with in-house made bushings. I would prefer to make the full aluminum ones for the 3geez.

Then I rendered the rears out a full piece of aluminum, sadly these are a little more expensive at nearly $180 a set so I am looking at making an alternative set, likely like the picture above, but a sandwich style plate that would bolt between the stock mount and the tower to allow for 1+ inch of extra travel.

Here is the render for the full one:

Here is the render for the sandwich plates. Not as impressive but much cheaper.

The black painted ones in the picture don't look cnc made, I see the welds.
You can actually make these relatively easy and you can even weld them from the underside where it can't be seen.
Nice cnc aluminum ones as described would be nice ones though.

If you read the text it notes that the black ones are laser cut flanges, dom tubing, then welded.

Re: Extended Top Hats and such- Cheddasauto

    True, pardon any implications
If you extend the tube around 3/16 thru the ring you can put a nice clean weld there and its hidden. Not as risky to get flush under the tower as well.

Are these going to require using a hole saw to open up the tower hole, remove the flange?

Again, nice solid cnc pieces will be nice.

Either option sure beats the long bolts method.

I agree, the one piece will be excellent. The fronts should not need any kind of modifications. Simply bolt in and go. If more that 1" of travel was requested, the shock top would have to be modified in terms of making the hole large enough for the shock to travel into the hole. If we use the sandwhich plate, the rears will need to incorporate the stock top hat, which will require the shock mount to be cut off flush with either a grinder or hacksaw. If we use the full mount in the rear, no modifications will be required.

Gotta remember that there's not a ton of hood clearance, either. You shouldn't ever have a problem with a 1 inch spacer, but much more and I imagine notching the hood might be needed. I can do a clay ball if you need the measurement.

Thanks for the offer, I wouldn't mind a little bit of something to work off of. I think that 1" will be plenty. Not to many more "yeses" and we can get these going.

I'll clay it tomorrow and get back with you. My friend has a 3D printer if you want to make one that hugs the hood. It's better to prototype in plastic if you're going to be throwing it away if it doesn't work. You should look into something like a Solidoodle or Makerbot if you want to do the RP thing.

I can typically make them from steel first. Steel is cheap easy to work with. I do have access to a 3d printer for rapid prototyping, but I haven't had to use it yet.

3.5" ? You must have cut a fair size hole into the shock tower to allow the shock to travel into the engine bay. Thanks for the info tho.

Yeah, I didn't have enough clay for that, so there's quite a bit more room than I thought. You should be good to go with at least a 2" top.

I guess I should show some of the cnc work before I make any sales. So here it is.

Here are the 6061 Aluminum Trans Mounts. Once I sell a few I will move onto the Engine and Rear mount Thanks for looking.

The first thing I am doing is the top hats. The trans mount is for a civic/crx or integra, but I can do them for the accord as well. The mount is $150 shipped, the front top hats are the same at $150.
