How-To change a headlight on a 3gee Accord\2gee Prelude

This is a how to that will show you how to remove/change a headlight, check the connection and adjust the headlight up/down and left/right.

You will need:
-Philips (+) head screwdriver.
-H6054 Sealed Dual Beam headlight(if you're replacing your headlight)
-3 Prong connector(if your replacing headlight connector.

Before you start on anything, to the right of the steering wheel is 3 switches. First switch is the one you need pushed on. Its the headlight up switch that keeps your headlights in the up position whether lights are on or not. The other two switches are your dimmer switch for gauge lighting and the rear defroster switch. Make sure you have the headlight switch to the right of the steering wheel pressed. DO NOT TAKE YOUR HEADLIGHTS OUT WITH YOUR HEADLIGHTS TURNED ON. DOING SO COULD RESULT IN ELECTROCUTION.

First, start off by removing the four screws in the black front cover. They're circled/arrowed in red. One on each side of the housing and two on top. The 2 yellow circles, one on the left, one on bottom are for directing the light beam in your set angle. You don't remove any screws just to adjust the light beam direction. To only adjust light direction, use only the two screws. No need to remove anything otherwise but this is only if you're changing your light direction and not the bulb itself.


Now, remove the black outer housing. It will look like this.


Now, to remove the headlight, remove the three screws, two on top sides, one on bottom. They're circled in green. CAUTION:THESE METAL RINGS ARE KNOWN TO BE FRAGILE AT THE SPOT WELD IN THE CENTER. HANDLE WITH CARE.

This ring around the headlight that retains it in should look like this.

Now, gently pull the top of the headlight out and down so you can disconnect the connector on the rear of the housing.


To replace your connector, just cut and splice/solder right past the old connector. They corrode and rust over time and tend to pull wires out of the connectors at times because of consistent opening and closing of the lid. Sometimes, this is where headlight problems are when they wont light up suddenly.

You can also see the two adjustment screws on the bottom and left of the housing.
The reinstallation is reverse order of disassembly. Enjoy. : D

damn thats different to a JDM accord. Instructions are the same tho. we have three adjusting screws.

I noticed there's a spot molded in on the left and right for adjustment screws but only the far outer screws to the fenders are there. You're right though. Years ago when I first took this thing apart, I took every screw out and figured this out. Lol figured I'd share the info that I learned. Lol

Let me add that the metal retainer ring that actually holds the light in can be fragile. Ive had several that split right where they spot weld it towards the middle.
You can adjust the beams without taking anything apart, in case thats all you wanted to do. Most cars only have two points of headlight beam adjustment.

That's why I replaced my headlights with Hella H4. You can change them from the back in about a minute.

You should add use of the head light switch to the right of the steering wheel, some people might not know how to get them up without turning the lights on and risking electrical shock. Am I right?

Very true. Consider it added. I totally forgot to include the switch. I always leave my switch on so it went without a thought. Lol
