    New owner - 1989 Accord LXi Coupe

    Greetings. Just bought an 89 Accord LXi Coupe - 93K miles. Head gaskets, water pump & 1 cylinder replaced about 2,000 miles ago...seller provided all receipts. Transmission seemed to shift hard so I took to a tranny shop today, they said that's normal for these cars...and he would tweak the pressure setting between to the lower end between 90-120 to soften the shifting. And he's putting true Honda fluid in after a full flush. Also replacing driver side axle & boot.

    My 81 accord hatchback just had an engine problem so looking forward to driving my new accord!

    Here's the symptoms, any suggestions? Overheated, still runs but very rought with lots of white smoke out the back. No water in engine oil when I checked the dipstick, but bubbles coming out of the radiator fluid when the cap is off.

    Wow. That's quite a shop. They can do things to the trans that even Honda couldn't do. LOL

    Your other issue is a bad head gasket.

    Is a head gasket change relatively easy (I have limited experience) or best left to a shop?

    I would have a shop change the head gasket. Change the timing belt and water pump while they have everything apart. However, if you have receipts from a head gasket change - you may want to talk to that shop first. See if it is still covered under warranty.

    Sorry to be the bearer of glad tidings, but unfortunately, the head gasket is a major repair and best left to the shop if you don't have a lot of wrenching experience.

    Got the 89 back from the tranny shop. Shifting is softer and runs great!

    for the overheating problem. i would look for any visible leaks if none I would change thermostate, making shure that it is installed the proper way. if it is upsidedown it will always overheat. I would also check radiator to see if it is clogged up. if so i would spimple buy a new one they are little over $100 dollars.
