    TEC vs Hitachi Distributor

well yesterday I was @ the scrapyard scoping out their honda's (found 2 B18 motors ) & came across an ek1 with an Hitachi dizzie. I know that the TEC dizzies ICM (igniter) are prone to overheating & causing your rpm needle to jump around & the ignition to fire early/late causing backfiring. well my ek1 has the TEC dizzie, so I wondering if I can swap in a Hitachi dizzie & if their prone to the same things ?

I didn't realize there were two different vendors on the EK1 motors as well. Yes they should swap right across without any problems whatsoever. I have no idea if the problem is the same with all of them or just a certain brand...

well I knew that certain years came with the Hitachi's, but never saw one. nor thought about swapping one in. I hope Hitachi's don't have the problems.

these years came with the Hitachi Dizzie.

    HONDA ACCORD (1982 - 1983)
    HONDA ACCORD LX (1982 - 1983)
    HONDA ACCORD SE 1983
    HONDA PRELUDE 1982

But looking @ the pics of it, it doesn't look like its adjustable. dont know if it would work.

    Re: TEC vs Hitachi Distributor

This thread is really interesting to me. Ive got the one with the external ignitor on the firewall, which one that is I'm not sure. But it has quite a bit of shaft play, and about two weeks ago I fired up the car in a parking lot, and the tach has been flickering and the car misses really bad under load.

I've replaced the plugs, wires, coil, and switched the firewall box for a known good one. Cap and rotor are recent, and show no wear or carbon tracking. Running at night in the dark revealed spark leakage on the coil wire, which has since been replaced.

So either way, If I can find a good distributer (the next logical thing to change) it'll be going in. So I'm curious about the interchange as well.

so that means there are 3 dizzies available for our cars. the TEC & Hitachi have the igniter on/in the distributor, unless its a different version of an Hitachi. can you post a pic of the dizzie & ICM ?

    Hitachi

I don't see an igniter on the Hitachi. The EK1 from 81 must have an external one too. Either that, or that manufacturer assumes they're the same part. I wonder if the timing curve is off, or if your vacuum advance is stuck.

I had my distributor apart last night and it didn't look like either of those inside. Maybe one of those is from a first gen?

The one in the 2nd pic is likely from a 1st gen. I recognize the two terminals that you plug the wiring into.

    Re: TEC vs Hitachi Distributor

ok guys, a long over due update.
I went to the scrapyard today & picked up one of both dizzies. pulled the TEC dizzie from an 82 & the Hitachi dizzie from an 83, both were 4drs LX's with the EK1 motor. I Installed the Hitachi dizzie in my car & it fixed the RPM needle from jumping around instantly. the tach is steady & smooth through all ranges she still backfires alittle when shifting from 1st to 2nd around 3k-4k & the car pulls much smoother from a stop light. I will get picks of the Hitachi dizzie installed on my EK1 here soon. I've also concluded that the RPM needle jumping around is caused from a problem with the dizzie itself not from the ICM or atleast in my case. I have about 5 or 6 different ICM's from 82-84 accords & none of them have an effect on the RPM needle. it still jumped around regardless of the ICM installed installing different TEC dizzies also causes different patterns in the jumping needle. so Id have to say this plague is isolated to the TEC dizzies. we'll see how the Hitachi dizzie holds up over the next few days. if any1 needs a extra TEC Dizzie I have 3 .

Good to know! Maybe I can convert my 81 to a 2gee Hitachi distributor. And get rid of these garbage remans once and for all.

    Re: TEC vs Hitachi Distributor

From what I have seen TEC's have screw on caps and Hitachi's have snap on caps.
I don't know why some EK1's have one and some have the other.

looks like that would work for an ES motor, wont work with the earlier motors like the EK1

Re: TEC vs Hitachi Distributor/igniter module/pickup coil (terminology changes)

People on here have helped me, so I'm passing info on for future readers.
My car is a carbed 89 Accord with Manual transmission and uses a Hitachi Distributor.
It has no gear on the bottom and plugs into a groove in the cam end on the passenger side.
The engine is a two liter A20 series engine.

It uses a metal vacuum advance with two small tubes for both vacuum advance and vacuum retard.
Some use a plastic vac adv-retard that is prone to breaking. The metal vac-adv-ret plugs into the distrib
and if the plug-in part is a couple thousandths too big to fit, it can be filed slightly. A single screw from the bottom holds the vac adv-ret in place. It has no gear on the bottom and plugs into a groove in the cam end on the passenger side.
The part number is D4R84-58 6Z02 on the casting.

I tried a copy-Paste pic of the igniter module/pickup coil (terminology changes) but the pic did not come out
in this thread. My Hitachi looks like your bottom pics and the electrical connectors are at the 3-4 oclock position
in your enlarged pic. In your top pic the TEC igniter module/pickup coil (terminology changes), is the square thing with two screws and mounts on the distrib outside.-Bob

Try this link to see the difference: https://www.3geez.com/forum/technical...ml#post1116578 Looks like this site is also not allowing me to post a copy-paste link, either.....
