    VIPER1988's 87 hatch

Finally get to start working on my hatch. This will be a long, slow going build as I am currently unemployed.

    Things to do:
    1. Rebuild engine
    2. 5-speed swap
    3. Poly bushings all around
    4. Paint/restore/replace exterior trim
    5. Get seats reupholstered
    6. Replace crumbly dash with less crumbly dash
    7. I don't know yet. But I'm sure I'll find something else i want to do.

This is my new dd while the hatch is down.

Barely squeezed her through the door. About 1\2 inch clearance on each side.

Got most of the auto interior stuff removed today. One last bolt holding the shifter assembly on. Have to remove the exhaust before i can get to it.

Finally got around to pulling the motor.

Not much room to work with. Would have been much easier if I had some help to. But I made due with what I had.

Got a bunch of the parts ordered.
Full engine rebuild kit including pistons
    dc header from nswst8
    unorthodox flywheel from military mase
    exedy clutch kit
    full set of prothane bushings
    magnaflow catalytic converter

And before I could order the rest my water heater decided it was going to rust through and flood the basement... Just my luck...

oem with this one. Hopefully next year I will be able to get started on the other. Other motor will still be n/a but will have every performance part I can find on it. Only things this one is getting are dc header, cai, lightweight flywheel, and basic rebuild. And doing 5 speed swap while I have it out. I would save the flywheel for the other motor, but its the only one I have.

Go figure. I need a new radiator. One I have was bought from Honda in 2004 with a lifetime warranty. "Sorry, that part has been discontinued. We can't exchange it for you."

lol. Got it from mother in law. Only thing that's been done to it is a cheap eBay full stainless exhaust system. Old exhaust looked like swiss cheese. lol

Finally back at it. Rebuilt the motor. Forgot to take pics in the process. Its just about ready to go back in. Still need a few things. Unfortunately the project is being cut short. Wife gave the 91 4door to her dad. So i have to get this back on the road asap. Going to finish the motor rebuild and 5speed swap for now. Everything else will have to wait.

    Re: VIPER1988's 87 hatch

Got more done today. Put wire harness and rest of accessories on the motor, removed and cleaned front suspension parts, and got most of the dash back in. Will add pics tomorrow. Wish i could find a dash thats not so brittle. Cracked in several places. Most wont be noticeable once everything is in. But still... Cant do any more until i get some $. Need nut for radius rod, 2 exhaust manifold studs, old bushings pressed out of lca, bolts for flywheel and pressure plate, starter, and rear mount bracket for manual trans. (Left mine in Florida)

Tried plastic model glue. Guy at the hobby shop said it melts the plastic together. Letting it dry over night. Suppose i will find out tomorrow how strong it is. Went to Fastenal and got most of the nuts and bolts i need. Only things they didn't have were the flywheel bolts and the nut for the radius rod. Friday i will be Checking the Pullapart for the rest of the stuff i need.

    Re: VIPER1988's 87 hatch

Well the model glue seems to be working well. Loaded glove box with tools and opened and closed it several times. Didn't break. Replaced all the front bushing with Prothane. Strangest thing with the suspension. Everything on passenger side was tightened proper and the bushings were in fairly good condition considering age. Driver side everything was loose and the bushings were pretty much gone. What would cause such a drastic difference from one side to the other? Removed 2/3 broken exhaust manifold studs. Third one the extractor broke off inside of... Tried drilling it out to retap it. But because of the extractor piece stuck in it the drill bit wouldn't stay centered. So hopefully it won't leak. I don't have money for another head right now.

Just realized that i never posted my brake and interior updates from a year or 2 ago. Did rear disk swap with EBC goldline rotors and green stuff pads all around. Replaced rubber lines with braided steel. Replaced factory blown out struts with Gabriel Ultra. Replaced worn out blue carpet with new black carpet. Added armrest and cupholder.

Had front calipers painted to match the back. But both were leaking when i started bleeding them. So i had to get new ones and didn't have enough paint left.

Went to the pullapart. Got rear mount bracket and flywheel bolts. Installed unorthodox flywheel and exedy clutch, mounted transmission, installed alt. and dropped it all back in the car. Exchanged passenger axle under warranty. Still need starter, driver cv axle, battery, and all fluids. Hopefully next week she will be back on the road.
