Advice on Exit Strategy for my '93 Accord

When I bought this '93 Accord SE, it had piston slap. I gave it to Mom because I hate it. She loved it and so I was still dealing with it constantly. Finally after 120k more miles, it has low oil pressure and is blowing blue smoke. Hooray! We can get rid of it. The car still runs and drives well and the blue smoke is only from take-off. The interior is pretty much perfect. We had the leather redone not long ago and it's clean. The suspension is still in great shape and everything has been maintained well. Unfortunately, the car was a magnet for body damage. There are a lot of random dings on the outside. I think every bumper corner has paint scraped off, the trunk lid has a dent and both doors on the driver's side are banged in. No lights are broken though and the doors all close and seal, etc. The car may pass another dreaded California smog test with the current cat, but it isn't going to be driving a lot further without seriously bad things happening.

I'm looking for opinions on the best way to unload it. What is it worth in this condition? Should I sell it now while it runs relatively well or drive it into the ground and scrap it? Do the tuners still like these cars? How likely is it to find some eager young lad looking for a car with a blown engine so he can swap an H22 into it? What boards should I list it on? etc.

    Thanks guys.

Blue smoke, could be the dreaded 4th gen burnt up cam "bearing" syndrome, eventually the cam breaks and pretty much farks the motor.

why not find a decent used engine and swap it out? if it is in that good of a condition. blue smoke on startup is possibly just stem seals, the exhaust seals especially tend to disintegrate,,which lets oil leak into the combustion chamber when it sits

Re: Advice on Exit Strategy for my '93 Accord

If it's still possible to get a used Japanese engine for these, then it's worth considering. Of course, if I do, then Mom will want to keep the car, so I'm not super excited about repairing it. Nor do I really have any place to do a major repair like that. At this point everything I do is out in the open air, on dirt. Floor jacks are hard, creepers are impossible.

Even with a good engine, the car isn't going to be worth more than $2,000, so it doesn't make any sense to try to fix it. Especially when I hate the car. My feeling is to sell it immediately while it still runs. Oil pressure is down to 5 psi at idle from 7 just last week, so I don't think it will be long before I start hearing rock and roll coming from the crankcase. Mom is of a different mind. She wants to drive it till it stops, so I guess it's moot. When it stops, I'll try to sell it as is and scrap it if I can't.

the reason I suggested that was if she likes the car, a used engine isnt that much, it's not that hard to change either, drop a used engine in and let her keep driving it until the wheels fall off

I'd say throw another engine in it (hell even if it has 150k miles on it) just make sure it isn't oozing oil from every orifice possible. Sounds like a good kick around car for your mom if she loves it that much (couldn't hurt it any worse than its current state of body disrepair). I had a 1992 Honda Accord DX that start puffing smoke around 305k miles. It lasted till 332k and the O.P. dropped to 2PSI and then it was the fourth of July in front of my house (just had to dodge flying shrapnel, LoL). Threw a $150.00 engine w/ 165k miles on it and drive it till the dreaded accident that killed everything (body estimated at 553k miles, engine unknown at this point due to a broken speedo cable). I lived in Las Vegas and drove 4.5 hours each way into Cali at least 3 days a week to fetch parts. It was great on gas. But ultimately its your car and your call.

I think I've decided what to do with the car. I've been wanting an engine to experiment with vegetable oil on and this car is going to be it! When I get around to it, I'll post a new thread about it.

Don't get rid of the car. It's way too clean. I'm in need of a daily but I would need something that's running. Sounds like this veggie oil sounds cool

Re: Advice on Exit Strategy for my '93 Accord

It really is clean. It bums me out that the body is all banged to crap. When I got it, the bumpers had scrapes on all four corners. I was planning to fix it when some gang banger in the Mission took out the two doors on the driver's side. Thought I was going to get stabbed before he broke my cell phone and fled the scene (SFPD was completely uninterested). Then some girl ran her Blazer into the back of it in the rain. Then someone in Whole Foods parking lot creased the trunk lid and buggered off. The body damage bill just kept going higher, so I gave up, gave it to Mom and bought the Bimmer. Being the veggie oil experiment will redeem it though.
