Bought an 88 DX with carb, 200,000 miles.
Nice car, but misses in #2. The mechanic said this, also said no vacuum leaks, and running very rich. He also didn't want to do anything else to check this out, I think he is intimidated by this car. He said you can't get carb rebuild kits for this thing anymore, got to replace the entire carb with a rebuild one for $500. He also said ethanol gas will ruin this carb and is likely the culprit. Compression check was good.
Symptoms: Runs better when cold; when warm, idles at 0-3000; idle bounces around, dies sometimes, esp. when I turn on the AC, sometimes idles really high; when city driving with steady foot on gas it jerks (he said #2 is missing - that's what it feels like); when accelerating it jerks sometimes like it is missing.
I don't like so many vacuum tubes! I've seen the post with Weber carb mod, also post with vacuum hose mod where like 5 tubes are left in the end? Also post saying that it might be the "high speed idle" (same symptoms), but I can't find the high-speed idle. I need a place to start, please give me some advice. Should I have someone put a Weber on it? Should I invest in the $500 rebuilt carb?
OK, I'm new here please forgive me for asking questions that are found in other threads. There's SO MUCH info here that it boggles my mind. I have, however, been looking through this stuff for a few weeks and just don't know where to start!!
