What are the other screwholes for?

Found an old timing advance bearing that I replaced in my dizzy awhile back. There's three screwholes in the bearing, one being where the vacuum advance arm connects to. What exactly are the other two in close proximity for? I'm assuming the special screw is in the correct hole? I think I may have removed it out of this one just messing with it. I can't remember.

It looks to me like four of the small holes create a perfect square, maybe for manufacturing. If you take those out of the question, do you still have the extra hole you were wondering about?

I've wondered about those too but haven't a clue what they do. I do know that if you break that plastic retaining ring around the outside of the plate, you'll be hosed.
