pictures of the new scoop baffling in progress

I'm in the middle of redoing the baffling on the hood scoop i got almost done and the stupid lexan cracked, well here's some pics so far will just redo with aluminum. it was a special hi temp lexan. i wanted to use it because you could see the hood bracing through it. anyway it will look basically the same remember this is under the scoop, the gray stuff is special material for making engine baffles for airplanes. I will keep updating as progress is made it's too hot today to do anymore. i'll just copy the patern off of the lexan and save the baffling pieces to put back on the aluminum. that material is hard to get because it contains asbestos, but it sure blocks heat. I thought about putting a small oil cooler hooked up like a heater core under that scoop for the winter time. use thermostatic controls like the heat door . that would help in cold weather.

the cowl induction will be the same this is to prevent heat from rising up into the filter from the engine, the old one didn't work very well. the hood scop looks like it does because it hasn't been painted yet, it took forever to get all the old paint off of the fiberglass. it's supposed to be from a ford torino from the late 60's early 70's. i just like it because it fits the contour of the hood perfecctly with no modifications.I had to make the grill though because i wanted it to be functional. Starsky and Honda It looks much better with paint believe me.

ok here it's done. fresh from the beadblaster completed plate with baffles riveted on riveting plate to hood, plate has already been clekoed in place with hood brace reinstalled for a note: the filter can pull air all the way around it it has a metal heat shield circling it to prevent air from being pulled from the engine compartment

nice work. you might want to round the edges of the scoop slightly just so it has more of a stock look. It can be too edgy, ya know? well, all you have to do now is be careful of when it gets into the wet season, you dont want any water in your engine. good job bro, keep it up.

oh, i've been through a hurricane already with it, don't have any water problems at all, i left enough of a gap to let water drain. all the air comes in at the back of the scoop.where the holes are. the scoop is baffled too so air goes directly into the filter.

thanks the only thing that drives me crazy is it goes through a filter about every three months. those filters cost about eight bucks each. summit said they make a cool blue filter in that size from accel i believe. those are reuseable. they cost 50 bucks, but if you add up the cost it's worth it. I wanted to stop radiant heat from rising into the scoop from the motor. my old baffles didn't work very well. never had a pic of those online, always took them off for pic clarity.

huh? it's under the scoop, none of the baffling is visible with the scoop on. when the scoop is painted the same color as the hood it's really unobtrusive. this is what it looks like when it's on the car. i'll be glad when i'm ready to get some paint on this thing. it required a lot of sanding because the six layers of paint on the scoop were cracking. it is 35 years old after all.

hey the scoop was free and it matched the contour of the hood perfectly. i wa told it was from a torino. this scoop project has been going on for almost two years. first it wasn't functional then i had to make the intake, then i had to make the scoop functional, then i just finished the baffling to make it a true cowl induction. i've been driving around with a temp sensor in the intake all day and it has dropped the intake air almost 50 degrees. my next project is to ceramic coat the cast part of the intake to keep even more heat out.

Buy a foam filter... you could fit an eddlebrock pro-flo(w) foam filter and modify the base, I had one on mine and I loved it.

That's awesome! Ceramic coating would be cool. What is the saying for every 10 degrees dropped it's 1% gain in hp right? So 5% of 115 = roughly 121 hp right?

i'm talking about bringing the temp back down to outside air temps. there was a lot of hot air rising into the scoop and it was getting into the filter. now it's closer to what the outside air temp is. that material is asbestos based so it blocks a lot of the radiant heat coming off the engine too. all the heat was coming through the radiotor and blowing back up the scoop and out. now it can't do that.

if anyone is interested here are some pics of the intake that goes with the baffling here are some of the raw materials including the raw casting the intake tube is made from and the air cleaner assembly, i used the bottom plate from two of these air cleaners and ditched the rest of it. everyting else is made from raw materials.

it looks like this i'm thinking about temp painting it, just so everyone will quit griping about the color it will be the same color as the car when it's all done. that's bare fiberglass gel coat right now with a little bit of primer left on it from sanding. it should blend in really well when it's done.

I looked at some of them today and they have to have a self supporting structure in order to work. the air cleaner part is two top plates with a rod going through them. the back plate is where the rod is attached and where the plate is welded to the pipe. there is a little aluminum gizmo attached to it that the rod screws into. the aircleaner has to be the wire mesh type because there is pressure on it from the top plate. i wouldn't mind finding a filter cover though. it also has to be three inches tall, talking about the filter height.

thanks, i think there was some misunderstanding on here by the way, I'm not taking the scoop off, I'm trying to keep the hot air from getting into it, that's what the baffling is for. your car looks nice ny the way, don't worry about the tape, i get a lot of comments on how bad my paint is,and i haven't even finished the body work yet.
