Went well. Long drive, but worth it. The car is pretty clean and definitely a keeper in my book. The engine could use a good tune up, but it seems to run decently enough. The car badly needs a new clutch. The car was with the original owner up until last year. So I'm only the 3rd owner of it. Original owners manual still in the glove box, and had all the guy's info in it from when it was bought new on 1/22/88. Car was built 8/87. Original owner was in the Air Force apparently, the address in the owners manual is that of an air force base, and it has an air force base sticker on the windshield from some base in South Carolina, and another sticker under that which says Department of Defense registered vehicle.
The car actually has 14 inch steelies with hubcaps. Definitely a real LXi model.
What do you mean by larger brakes? Would it be worth while to swap the brakes off my 4 door '89 LXi parts car?Originally Posted by ghettogeddy
glad to hear, you made it ok..now clean it and give us pics..

nice hatchie!
Remeber boys and girls Coupes rule, Hatchies drule, and 4 doors are for mothers..........
I don't agree with what Ghetto said because I'm 99% positive all 88-89 LX-i's came with larger brakes up front than that of all models from 86-87, and DX/LX's from 88-89. They did this upgrade to the front brakes because (in theory) of the greater horsepower/torque output of the fuel injected models, and their need to stop that additional power. All coupes and hatches (I'm pretty sure) never came with alloy wheels, but instead (with the exception of the SE-i) only came with either 13" (DX/LX) steelies or 14" (LX-i) steelies (all with hub-caps).
But as for brake upgrades, you can easily swap our your rear drums for disc from an SE-i (a few sets for sale in the Market Place) and get better stopping power, and more importantly, easier brakes to maintain. I would highly suggest it if you have the disposable money, and/or need new brakes out back.
Glad to hear you made it back OK, and the 3g proved reliable on it's first trip with you. Now give it a good waxing, vacuum it out, and post up some damn pics.

I actually towed the car back. No way it would have made it back under it's own power. Nothing really special to see in the pics, clear coat is peeling and stuff. But, I'll try to get some up tomorrow night.
I drove the car up the road for the first time a couple of hours ago to put some gas in, since it was showing totally empty, almost didn't make it back. First problem, got out on the street, shifted 1st through 4th, no problem, put it in 5th, nothing. 5th gear is out. Got to the gas station, shut it off to put gas in, then couldn't get it started back up. Turned over real slow, sounded like the timing was too far advanced or something. Roll started the car and back out on the street, then as I was driving the car started slowing down, even as I pressed the gas harder. By time I got back to my house, I could hardly give the car any gas at all, and smoke was coming out from under the dash and hood. Popped the hood, and found that the rubber casing was melting off the throttle cable. Seems someone replaced the ground cable on the battery, and only routed it to the engine block. The block was not grounded to the body in any way, so it took the path of least resistance and grounded out through the wire in the throttle cable, which caused the wire to heat up. Thankfully I have another good throttle cable on my '89 parts car.
So as it stands, it looks like I'll just be pulling the engine and trans out, finding another good 5 speed, putting a new clutch in and just tossing the lower mileage '89 engine in it. I need this thing to be reliable every day.
haha yeah my 3g melted its throttle cable! ground problems scare the shit out of me now!

One thing that is a MUST on these cars is to ground it out.. up grade all the ground wires... because if those things are shot.. or the connections are dirty the car will run rough.. or shut off.. or wont even start at all.. so you might want to look into that..
one day I'll return.
Well, I was kind of pissed about 5th gear being out at first. But it looks like it has turned into a blessing in disguise. I posted an ad up on Craigslist looking for another good 5 speed for the car. Well, the next day I get a call. A guy not far from me has a 5 speed that was just rebuilt, new pressure plate, clutch, throw out bearing, and resurfaced flywheel, he has receipts for all the work, and wants $250 for it all. What a deal. But here's the kicker, if I buy this trans, I gotta take the whole car that it's still attached to as well, a 1986 Accord DX 4 door. So, it looks like this Saturday, just over a week after buying the '88 hatch, I'll be going to pick up an '86 4 door. He had all that work done, and then the oil pump seized up and the engine now has a bad knock in the bottom end.
So... basically I plan to use the engine from my '89, and the trans from this '86 in my '88 hatch. I'm thinking I will take the automatic from the '89, and the original engine from the '88 hatch, slap them together and put them back in this '86, clean it up a little, and turn around and flip it for like $500-$800.
Here's pics the guy sent me of the '86:
The wheels come with it as well. They MIGHT end up on the hatch, I'll have to try a couple on it and decide if I like them.
that's not an 86. it's an 88 or 89. If I'm not mistaken, that interior was only available in the 88-89's, and it's got 88-89 front corners, grille, bumper, and taillights.
Damn you for getting a sweet deal on that.
Edit: ...and it's not a DX. That's got power mirrors and windows, which were not available in the DX. It's either an LX or LX-i.

nice i would fix up the sedan nice dash an rims on it.
Went and got the car last night. She knocks hard core, but otherwise runs very good. Turns out is an '89 LXi. The car is in better shape then I thought it was going to be. If it had a paint job, the exterior would look great. The interior needs some new front seats, and the carpet cleaned real well, but it is otherwise in very nice shape as well. Even has a working sun roof.
Well, I'm not going to get rid of it like I had planned. Kid I bought it off of was very attached to the car, was his first he drove through high school and what not. I am still going to take the stuff I need off of it. All the 5 speed stuff, and the wheels are going on my hatch. But I'll put an automatic back in this car with the steel rims, and get a decent engine together for it and keep it on the road. My cousin I sold my '85 to said she might be interested in the car as well, she wants an automatic. I might just straight up trade her for the '85 back.

sounds like a good plan!

Well damn....
Well, I went junkyardin' today, lost count of how many 3geez I looked at at around 35... there were over 90 of them between the three yards I went to. Came across an '87 Hatch with these awesome rear window louvers on it:
Scored those for $15.50!
Also got the front corner lights and one of the plastic strips that goes across the headlight buckets that I need. I'm still looking for a nice one for the right side if anyone has one.
And I picked up the left and right LXi alloy wheels I need to complete my set (my green '89 parts car has two on the front, missing the rear two for some reason). Also got the center caps. It all needs to be cleaned and painted, but will look good when all said and done. I'll probably stick these on the hatch to see how I like them, it's either going to be these or the aftermarket rims that came on the black '89. Either way I've been reading up on the whole prelude upper control arm deal, and plan to lower the car some.

i love the lx-i fanblades.

oh shit. what color what that hatch you scabbed the louvers off of? Did it happen to have a roof rack on it? IF so, please call that yard and tell them under no circumstances should they crush that car.
Those LX-i wheels will look tittles on that car too.
