    Noisy in 5th gear!

My car is noisy when I put it in 5th gear...but all the rest of the gears quiet...does anybody know what the problem could be? At first, I was just guessing it could be old age and high mileage (242,000 miles) but, I am wondering if I could be low on transaxle fluid. NE1 have any ideas?

Well, that did not work. It was low so, drained and refilled it. Still noisy. I think the syncro is what making all the noise. I guess I will drive it until gives out completely...as long as I can get three more months out of it.

From what I've heard, it's pretty common for 5th gear to give out on the 3g Accords.

nah, just use 5th til it dies. the synchro probably is whats making the noise. when the synchro dies, the transmission won't stay in 5th gear, and you wont use it anymore. all you need 5th for is anything bigger than about 80 mph anyway, so you should be ok.

More than 80? WTH? I use 5th all the time. I wouldn't drvie down the freeway in 4th anyway that's rediculous.

It is possible that you have been running the wrong type of fluid which will dry up 5th and reverse.

reverse seems to be fine...and yes, I use my fifth gear all the time...I sometimes shift into fifth at 45 mph...I would not drive the car over 50 in 4th gear.

Well, it is much quieter since I added a quart of oil to the transaxle. Thing shits like new now. Now it is quieter in 5th gear when on the gas but, when coasting or taking my foot off the gas pedal, I can hear the syncro whine like mad...I am thinking I probably damaged it by running the gear box low on oil....at least it will keep going for a while longer now! :-)
