ok, my friend told me his friends dad has some honda wheels that he wanted to sell. my friend has a '92 accord sedan, so he wanted to get them for him. so we went over there to look at them and i see some fairly decent looking old 13in 16 spoke wheels. i've seen them on 2nd gen accords and thats about it. they are supposed to be for a civic though. anyway, the guy wants $50 for all 4. i'll look at them again because i only picked up one. the others were in a hard to get to spot. they need to be refinished a little. the clear coat on the face is old and needs to be sanded off and redone. i can do that. i think i may get them, considering that price. here's a pic of what they look like. i'm kinda obsessed with buy 80's honda wheels. i just know these arent the most common wheels to come by.

i dunno. i like riddin' old school. just gotta get the right size tire. like the 13's i have right now have 175 60's on em. for one the width is too small for a large accord and the sidewall is too short. but i gotta say those 15's you have on your car look bad ass! they look just right on your car. anyway, i'm going to get some 205 60's for these 13's if i get them. already got the tires lined up if i want to get them.

ayt. well i got those wheels. paid $40 for all 4. they said one was bent, but its not much of anything. not like my 10 spoke 13s. i'm going to probley refinish them. they look pretty good now. they just need to be washed up. maybe i should powder coat them? my mom is gonna save here old stove for me to do powder coating. i'll get some pix of those rims when i get a chance.

here's some pix i took of them a little bit ago. they are made by Western Wheels for Honda. says they were from '84, but i dunno if thats right.

pretty good for a $40 investment. I wouldnt say those wheels are that hard to find. Some of the wheels that were able to be added on for our accords are harder(like mine)

i remember those starish looking wheels on a 2nd gen prelude i found at the junk yard, but i only found them once. i've seen them on a few other preludes around town, but not many. before i know it i'll have a collection of old honda wheels.

my friend wanted me to roll on his 17in ATS rims. i think the model is Cup. i'm not completely sure. anyway, these were on his audi but its been parked for a few months and he said he doesnt want flat spots. he's been begging me to roll on them. so we put them on. they look pretty good i guess. but they are heavy as shit! my 14in prelude wheels didnt fit his audi because the raised ring on the hub was too large in diameter. anyway, here's a pic. i'll probley get some more later when i get some time. i told him i'd give him $400 for them. he said no, but i think that was more than a fair offer. nobody is going to pay more than that, well thats in their right mind i suppose.

if any one was wondering, the pic was taken with a loooong duation exposure. its dark right now.

I wish that some company could make some replicas of that and make them in a 16/17 inch size. Those would be pretty tight in my opinion

Nah, 400 is too much for used rims that you aren't in love with. Unless they are super-light and rare. I would look for some GSR rims, LS mesh wheels, or replica slipstreams. I used to be into the big wheels but the inconvenience, weight, and tire price that comes with them just makes them so much more less desirable to me at least.

It's funny that you show those wheels. I purchased a set for my 3gee in GT4 under the used daily rim sale...;)

HondaBoy

cool. yeah, those ATS rims are really nice and look great on my 3gee eh? but they are quite heavy IMO. i mean comparing them to my friend BBS rims on his Jetta GLI. that's exactly why i dont want to get away from my 13's. i really dont like the way these 17's handle on my car. my 13's with the right sized tires feel nice and smooth. i thought i'd take some more pix of the 17's. i'll post em a little later here.

hmm, i just found these ATS wheels online. the model is DTM. i can get them for about $70. no wonder people thought my offer of $400 was too much. i might as well buy them brand new!!!

ok, well these 13's are now in the process of being refinished. i've stripped the clear coat off and have been wet sanding them. the oxydation was pretty bad. i didnt think it would mess up the finish that much but it did. their original finish is kind of groves across the surface that are polished, like a lot of other honda wheels. anyway, the surface is getting worn down some with sanding. not that i really mind, i'd rather paint them a color. i thought graphite would look good but then i though of how small they are. i think they'd look even smaller, so i am probley going to paint them silver with black insets. or, if i can get ahold of a polisher, i may polish out the face of the wheels and clear coat them. either way they should look really nice when they are done. the reason i kind of want to just paint them is that there are a few surface scuffs. i was going to fill those and smooth them out so it looks better. would metal putty/filler stuff work well on them? i was going to try making the lip smoother where it has some curb rash on one of them. oh, and as for the center caps, i think i may do something with them. they are the old ones that stick out a lot. i looked at them and i think i'll take some of the material off of them so they sit lower. they will still fit into the holes and not come out.

ok, as of now i've made up my mind on how to finish these wheels. they are going to have a polished face with black insets, between the spokes. i already tried out polishing a spot. came out pretty nice and smooth. should look sort of like polished billet wheels. i just have to sand off some of the grooves left on the surface from the original finish. this may take a little bit of time, but i want them to have an even and smooth finish. they should look pretty clean when they are done. if i keep working on them i might be able to finish the face of the wheels by saturday, polished and everything. i still need to figure out what i want to do for painting the insets. i may take it to someone and have it done or something, i dunno. maybe powder coat the insets. when i get them done they will but sittin with some 205/60/13's. hopefully the place will still have a set of those tires in stock, they arent that common. i'll try and post some pix of how they are lookin.

here's what they are lookin like. for now i have this one completely sanded down and a few spokes polished. unfortunately this seems like its going to take more time than i though. if i had days off i could get them done a lot faster. i do have monday off, but i will probley have stuff to do. maybe i'll just make time to work on them. anyway, here's some idea's of what they'll look like. maybe you can see where they are polished. i'll still have to go over it another time to make them have an even polished finish, to take the swirl marks out.

here's the wheel thats closest to done, just needs to be painted between the spokes. hmm, well these really arent very common wheels. if they are so common we would have seen at least a few members with them on their cars i'd think. anyways i could care less. they are turning out pretty nice. its some work, but how they are turning out makes it worth the work. i was thinking, maybe i should go get the tires put on already. i can still work on them with tires on them. people were telling me to paint these red or something, ugh no. after i'm finished with these i'll try using that polishing compound on my 10 spoke 13s. i'll see how it does on those. they arent anywhere as bad as these were. they are just a little dull.

Thats why you don't because they are common on 2nd G Accords, I'll take a pic of my girl friends and probally about 10 other cars w/ those rime around here. But all and all they look better than stock all cleaned and polished. A+

07-21-2005, 11:50 AM
From what I recall, 2nd gen Accords only came with steel rims, except for the SE-i. I could be wrong though. The SE-i wheels were similar, but I don't think they were those exact ones. The LX came with wheel covers and the base model came with steel rims and, I think, chrome rings.

well, after only really finishing polishing one wheel, i've decided to go ahead and polish the other 3. i was debating on whether or not to paint the spokes and just polish the lip. now i've started back up and i think this time i'm going to stick with it. all i need is some more polishing wheels for my rotory tool and maybe some more compound. also need to paint the insets black and mount tires on them. they should be really nice when i'm done. i'll show some new pix when i get to them.

HondaBoy: I like those wheels. I've been looking at Acura 15s on Ebay this evening, but if I could find some like yours for what you paid, I would buy them instead. The extra work is worth it! You'll have wheels you put work into, that look the way they do because of the work you did. Can't wait to see them!

Does anyone know how tough it is to find alloys on Hondas in the JY? I assume most decent wheels are yanked when the cars come in....

actually i see nice wheels on the hondas and acuras at junk yards many times. but theres usually not too many of them. anyway, thanks for the comment. here's a ghetto test fit pic just to give you an idea of what they'll look like. small, they are 13's.

you do know the top one that you want it 14's are the 85-87 prelude Si wheels?

HondaBoy
04-06-2006, 11:51 PM
i dunno, the ones i've looked at in the junk yards are 13's on the preludes up until like the 3rd gen body, and no never seen them in 14's on any prelude. just 13's. if you can find them for me in a 14 inch then post it up. but i'm quite sure nothing here in the US ever came with them in 14's. otherwise i'd probably have a set considering i've seen that model on many preludes.

these are the ones that i'm talking about, only available in 13's that i can find.

ok, well its been since april since i really did anything to these wheels. i've sanded on them and stuff but nothing much has come along. i put one in the sand blaster cabinet to see how it would look in a spot. came out nice and sands out nice to where i can polish them out. so i decided to do the whole wheel and it came out just how i wanted it. made quick work of getting the mass amount of corrosion off that was all on the inside of the rim and behind the spokes. so this whole time i should have just done that. next week i'm going to take the wheels back to class and work on them again. i'm going to go ahead and sand blast the 3 that i have left. i was thining of just clear coating the sand blasted surface. it came out looking like silver painted with metal flake. but i think i really just going to polish them out and paint the insets black, and then clear coat the entire rim so i dont have to polish on them all the time. there's a piece missing from the lip of the rim pictured. i'm going to see if the welding shop will weld the piece back on and i can finish it off to make it look good as new.

here's some pix from today. got the remaining 3 rims sand blasted. sanded the face on one down and used a bench polisher on it. just had time to do one pass. came out better than i thought it would.

i'm trying to decide what color to paint the insets and the unplolished parts of the rim. i was thinking black would just be easy and not hard to keep looking clean. others were just clear coat the sand blasted surface, or gun metal grey, and red but i dont think that'll fly with too many people but was a suggestion from about 5 people i've showed the rims to.

this is what they look like new

wow...they look fucking awesome! they would be even cooler if they were bigger but they're still great looking

what if you polish them but paint the sides of the fins red?

HondaBoy
10-26-2006, 12:44 AM
by the sides of the fins, you mean the parts which are really the spokes? that would probably look good, but would be more work than i want to do. with what ever color i go with, i am going to tape off the polished face and spray all the parts at once. i'm going to see if i can do this same thing, but powder coat them. i dunno if we have the stuff to do it in the body shop, but if we do i'd like to do that. powder coat would be much more durable. but i'll probably go with a primer, then some rim paint and clear coat over it.
