How-to Fuel Pressure Gauge (F.I.)

This is a How to for installing an under-hood fuel pressure gauge on fuel injected models. I thought I would share this with the group. It's not very difficult but hopefully it will help someone who is thinking about doing this.

What you will need:

Mechanical fuel pressure gauge $15 (liquid filled or not)
Fuel filter line pressure gauge adapter $13 (this is listed for civics and integras on ebay, but works for us too) here is the link:

2, 1/8" NPT thread 90 degree brass elbows $3
1, 1/8" NPT thread 1 1/2" brass pipe $1.50
1, 1/8" NPT thread brass female coupler $1.50
1 roll of Teflon Tape $1
Flash light of some type
A good set of tools in metric and SAE sizes because though our cars use metrics, the fittings and the gauge are SAE sizes. Example: Factory fuel line banjo bolt = 17mm, new adapter banjo bolt = 11/16"


No smoking or open flames..we're working with gasoline here so use some common sense and be safe.

Below is the location of the fuel filter.

Step 1
Remove the 17mm factory fuel line bolt and make sure not to loose the copper washers. They need to go back on the adapter the same way they came off.

Step 2
Replace the factory fuel line bolt with the adapter bolt. Use the factory copper washers because the brass ones the adapter comes with do not seal well. I learned this the hard way..

Now that the adapter is in place you must route the fittings so that you can see the gauge. Below is a mock up of what that should look like. Note that in this pic there is no Teflon tape on the threads because it is just a mock up. Do not install all this without Teflon tape. It WILL leak without it.

Step 3
Install one of the brass elbows into the adapter with Teflon tape on the threads of the elbow. I rap the threads in tape twice. Below is properly applied Teflon tape on the elbow.

Step 4
Rap the second elbow with Teflon tape, then install it into the first elbow so that the female hole is pointing up like in the picture below.

Step 5
Install the pipe in the second elbow with Teflon tape on both ends of the pipe just like you did for the threads on the elbow.

Step 6
Install the coupler onto the pipe which should already have Teflon tape on it's threads. You can use this coupler to tighten the pipe into the elbow. It should now look like this.

Step 7
Put Teflon tape on the threads on the back of the gauge and screw the gauge into the coupler. Use a wrench to tighten the fitting attached to the gauge into the coupler. It should look like this.

Now that it's all installed grab your flash light and crank the engine. Check for leaks around all the fittings and check the factory lines that run into the filter as well. If nothing is leaking then your ready to roll. Take it for a short drive and let the engine get up to operating temp then stop and check for leaks again. Now that your done with that you can go order an adjustable fuel pressure regulator from BLOX and read the great write up done by Pico for installing it. Here's the link to his write up.

Sticky for now, I'll make it a how to when I have a little more time.

don't use the Teflon tape, use the liquid thread sealer, you might also want to find a way to shorten up or move that long piece of tube, the problem is over time vibration is going to make it want to snap at the base, I've seen oil pressure senders break off with exactly the same kind of setup

this is what you want to use, keep the teflon tape for fixing the sink.

Lostforawhile is correct on this. Thread sealant is the correct thing to use on the threads. It will make a more reliable seal plus you dont risk getting teflon in the injectors. So use thread sealant in place of the teflon tape.

I just screwed a mechanical gauge to the fuel filter port and that was it. Most of those kits come with an adapter.

I really think one with an electric sender is the way to go with an in cab gauge.

i only used two parts that came with the little kit the gauge and the bolt
