Re: Labeledsk8r's 89 LX-i coupe update thread
There are two I believe under the lower rad hose. Just reach your hand in there and search for them. There's also two bolts that are removed from under the car. They are for the dogbone mount, not sure if you removed that already. If you haven't, get under the car and feel for the two bolts.

Remove the top dogbone mount 5 bolts total (two 12 x 1.25 / three 10 x 1.25
Remove the bottom damper bracket (under transmission) 3 bolts 8 x 1.25
Remove the front transmission mount (connects the transmission to the engine) 3 bolts 10 x 1.25
Remove the 3 bolts connecting the rear transmision mount to the engine 10 x 1.25
Remove the clutch dust cover bottom of the transmission, I believe there are 2 bolt
Remove the starter 2 bolts 10 x 1.25
Remove the last 3 bolts 10 x 1.25 transmission to engine, these are the on the clutch lever/cable side of the transmission.
Now the trans will slide away fron the engine.
Email me and I'll email the diagram from the book

10's are 14s correct and 8s are 10's? one thing i noticed was every damn bolt is a diffrent length... dunno if thats normal.. i should have this out before i go to work tomorrow... also one thing i noticed about me working on new projects like this is that i have to stop after a few hours becuse i will get fed up becuse i feel im not moveing fast enough.. i think thats why i keep getting worried that im not finding them... stoping after a bit then going back at it gives me fresh eyes

Re: Labeledsk8r's 89 LX-i coupe update thread
just got off work so i will update.. i didnt have enough time to take the clutch or presure plate off.. the trans itself looks fine the spring is fine everytihng in the bellhouseing looks fine just super greasy.. i will get up early tomarrow and inspect it all before i go to work again, also how do i check to see if the throwout bearing is bad? another thing i just had this clutch installed but its allready coated in black buildup is this normal
-
Re: Labeledsk8r's 89 LX-i coupe update thread
You need to check for freeplay in the bearing. It shouldn't have any play, if it has play replace it along with the spring. As far as black buildup, I didn't have any type of buildup when I pulled my trans off after I replaced the clutch a year ago. I had some dust from the clutch but it still looked clean. Mark the pressure plate and flywheel with whiteout so you can reinstall it correctly later. It may not make a difference but its a good piece of mind.

Re: Labeledsk8r's 89 LX-i coupe update thread
i think you should be able to check the throw out bearing by just spinning it with your finger, if it doesnt feel 100% smooth then it probably is bad, though im sure if it was bad, every time you touch the clutch while the car is running you will hear it making some kinda brushing sound. that build up is probably either old clutch dust that whoever installed the new clutch didnt clean it, or the new clutch sucks, or it wasnt installed properly (ie, tq'd properly) apparently im told that contains asbestos, so dont breathe it in :) jm2cw

Re: Labeledsk8r's 89 LX-i coupe update thread
Remove the throw out bearing and check it for excessive play. Alot of slop equals bad bearing. It should spin smoothly.
How long ago did you have the clutch done?

Re: Labeledsk8r's 89 LX-i coupe update thread
To reiterate what was said about the clutch dust, DON'T BREATHE IT IN!!! Use brake cleaner to wash it away.
Make sure you can shift in and out of every gear. It may be a bit tight, but you don't have the leverage you normally would. The shifts should feel pretty crisp. If you absolutely can't get it into any particular gear, then I'm betting you have a bent shift rod.

best of luck....i need to remove mine and get it rebuilt again...since its still under warranty

lol.. allright i messed with the trans a bit... spring is good and retracts the throwout all the way back.. the bearing spins just fine and doesnt stick.... now the shif lever i 1 do not know how to shift it lol i can pll it out and in thats it i dont know wich way to push it to shift to other gears.. i tried up down and side to side and couldnt get it in any other gear
i really dont know what else to check

DO NOT USE AEROSOL. Just a few drops of dawn and water to clean it. Wet it down first, then wash it off.

Put one of your axles back in and spin the tranny. Pull and push the shifter arm.

no aerosol?? i allready sprayed it down with almost a can of break cleaner lol .. whats the problem with useing aerosol's?
also i pulled it in and out and it clicked just like going into gear but thats only 2 gears ,, im kinda scared to think this is the trans if so i need to buy one form someone asap becuse im running out of time i was only given 2 weeks to do this and im allready a week down and still dont know the problem
-
Re: Labeledsk8r's 89 LX-i coupe update thread
to test the other gears shift it back to the middle and twist it side to side & up and down like you would as if you where using the shifter. you might need to use a skrewdriver or something for leverage though. also in each gear spin the input shaft and see if the axles move like the should (1 going foward, other going backwards)

If it is an asbestos clutch disk (which I doubt, too many lawsuits) the aerosol will put the finer particles in the air around you. And if you don't have the apropriate respirator, guess where the particles are going. Into the lungs.
Just like the brakes, wet them down first then wash them off. Brakes are exposed to the elements so a dawn water bath will do no harm, then you use the brake cleaner to remove heavier grease deposits,

make sure the correct length bolts go in their perpective holes !
I know what you mean about stopping and coming back to it later, that is naturally how it goes even with the pros. I hate it when something takes way longer than it was supposed to, ahhhhh im there right now.

Re: Labeledsk8r's 89 LX-i coupe update thread
You don't move the rod up and down when you shift. It only goes side to side in and out. If I remember correctly, rod going to the left and out is first, to the left and in is 2nd, in the center and out is 3rd, in is 4th. 5th is to the right and out, and reverse is to the right and in.
This is if you are looking at the transmission from the back of it where the shifter connects, sitting upright of course the way it would be in the car.

well thats what i tried.. i will try it agian i na few.. if thats the case i could not get it out of 2nd and 3rd... when the car broke i was in second... could the trans be locked in that gearset??

Re: Labeledsk8r's 89 LX-i coupe update thread
I do hope you can get it fixed, trannys are not my favorite thing to work on wouldn't even know how to give you advice.
Good luck,

There could be a chance. Give it another try, if you don't have luck then start hunting for a replacement trans.:violin:
I have had my transmission not shift at all on very hot days. I would shift out of fifth and go into 4th and it won't go in. I have to double clutch to make it go into 4th, my guess is a synchro acting up.
