how do i stop exhaust smoke?

yeah well my car is pretty bad, all i gotta do is the alt (still waiting 2 get a socket *sigh*)and then the car should be drivable. and also theres no proof of a blown head gasket, and that catalytic converter light is on, so i was thinking to get a W.O.F i could maybe just fix my alt and disconnect the catalytic sensor and do something to stop the smoke comming outta the exhaust just temp. all i needa know is what can i do just to stop the smoke from comming outta the exhaust for only about 40 mins? thats it, just so it can go through the W.O.F station without smoking the hell outta there??? our W.O.F station up here is pretty cheap with there work, they let you get away with alot, so im sure something hori like this wouild pass

    thanks in advanced

    i love 3geez

to stop the smoke do the following:

    go to the supermarket

buy an idaho potato (i dont know if they have these in new zealand)

stuff it in your tail pipe.

and watch the smoke NOT come out.

    wait ten mins

    and watch the fireworks! lol

My car smokes for 5-10 minutes upon start up after it has been sitting for a day or 2, once at operating temp it goes away. If yours does the same, just get it warmed up before W.O.F. Also get this stuff called guaranteed to pass emissions (gtp) I think walmart may carry it, If not your local parts store.
The stuff really does work if you follow the directions precisely.
or... Just take your cylinder head to a head specialist, Have them re-cut the valve seat, replace valve stem seals, 3-angle valve job and mill the head ! Not sure how much that would run you, But here it's only $150 including parts and labor.

if you take the head off to do a valve job you might as well AT LEAST re-ring the engine. Then it definately wouldn't smoke!

are you getting coolant in your oil or oil in your coolant? if you are, you have blown headgasket.
If you have white smoke when you start the engine in the morning, it should be normal. it is condensation. it will burn off after a while.

when coolant burns, it smells very sweet.

nope its blue smoke, so much that its hard to see thru it, the smoke dies down after about 5 mins, but still there. the person we bought it off said it had a blown head gasket, but theres no proof coz we put water in our radiators, we dont use coolant and the oil doesnt seem that watery. theres only 1 weird thing about this and thats the big oil splatter on the bonnet

so it looks like the oil rings on your pistons are shot and/or your valve seals.

I'd just take that head off your old motor and put it on the shortblock you've got now and see where you are when the dust settles.

yeah i have to agree. find yourself another block with cylinder head. most likely you need to rebuild the engine.

and for the price of a engine rebuild i could just buy another car, or buy a b20a manual + ill need to get a couple head gasket sets, and a lot of tools. would it be better just to swap the entire engine??? over here they sell cheap ass engines, example: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Mo...n-50411664.htm dunno what it came out of though, but id like dat

Re: how do i stop exhaust smoke?

Rebuilding an engine price depends on what shape the motor is in & the machine work involved.

Blue smoke is caused by engine oil entering the cylinder area and being burned along with the fuel air mixture. As with the white smoke, just a small drop of oil leaking into the cylinder can produce blue smoke out the tailpipe. Blue smoke is more likely in older or higher mileage vehicles..

Edit- Worn piston rings, valve stem out of tolerance, valve guides worn out, leaking head gasket & bad valve stem seals cause blue smoke. First thing, do a compression test & see what kind of shape the motor is in

Compression test will tell you alot. Look at the spark plugs for signs of oil burning as well.

if you can get B20A with 5 speed, i would say go for it.
It may cost you same price as rebuilding, but at least you will get 160hp.
