well the paint looks really bad because i'm in the middle of finishing the body work right now,it'll be painted soon,it's a daily driver so i try to keep it clean but it gets messy,I need to get some saddle soap and clean my seats again. as far as the valve cover you can paint one in an afternoon,I had to pull it to replace the seal for the 20th time so I repainted it again. I just used ordinarry semigloss black on the valve cover, been on there for a long time before, and i did the oil cap with that purple anodize paint.

I appreciate it but i've got a spare around here somewhere,I have a powdercoating place withing walking distance of where I work, they have done a lot of the aluminum pieces on the inside for me,like the black piece the altimeter is mounted in. also a bunch of switch bezels and stuff. they also did a great job on that trim piece that goes over the rear window on the hatch, they are impossible to find so i spent a long time taking out stone dings and then they powdercoated it for me. I'm fixing to move shortly and when I can get my shop back up i'm thinking of getting one of those powdercoating systems from eastwood. I already have a spare kitchen oven for curing the parts. it's pretty easy to do. as far as the valve cover it's been painted for a long time,I just freshened up the paint a bit. that purple anodize paint is available at autozone, advance, and walmart. i've had some of those parts painted for years with it,has held up great.

Re: finally a few CLEAR!! pictures

Oh a couple of people were wondering why there were wires hanging down,Normally there is a plug there,I put the original dome light in the hatch cover,I had to cut the plug out because I've had to keep removing the big plastic piece in the hatch, thats also why it looks so messy, I had to repair that entire left corner of the car. it's done now,so i can clean it back up. I still need to make the fiberglass piece for that side, passenger side is almost done, and the tv monitor is installed. all i need to do for that side is upholster the fiberglass piece and install it.

    That looks awesome.
You, sir, have inspired me to restore the dented and rusting body of my hatch myself. Maybe.
How difficult would it be without a shop? Is it even remotely concievable to attempt this in my backyard, or should I just take it somewhere to have it done?

Of course I'm lazy. If I wanted to work on my car I'd have gotten a DSM

It depends on what you need to do,taking the night class in autobody really helped a lot, have you considered doing something like this? it's a great skill and a chance to work on your car. all schools are different so you need to talk to someone there. it's always a bigger project then you think it will be,my car was relativly rust free, and dent free until I started taking it apart. thats when you find the suprises. yes you could do it in your back yard if you want to,I have a tiny garage where i've done a lot of it. I also work in an aircraft plant with a machine shop, thats where I make a lot of custom stuff. but i've also done a lot of it in the yard and in my living room. I have an understanding wife who is in school with me also, she doesn't complain (too much) when I bake parts in the oven or wet sand in the bathtub. it's all about how much time you want to dedicate to the project. so far this one has seven years in it,and the final paint isn't even on yet. right now we have car parts completly filling one of our back rooms, and parts all over the living room. i'm fixing to hunt down some links on some of the work as we were doing it.
heres the first one, still searching for more

I'd love to take a night class, but it would just depend on how many nights. I can't give up evening Kendo training, and I have comic book work to do at nights as well. I guess doing a lot of research and experimentation is the way to go. I have some severely wrinkled body panels that probably need to be replaced, so I guess that's where I should start. A full de-rust wouldn't hurt either. It'd be nice to have this car running for a long time, so I guess I should look for rust now before any permanent damage is done. What I find attractive about this project is the fact that while it takes a lot of time, it doesn't take so much money, or am I totally off on that?

Re: finally a few CLEAR!! pictures

It's going to still cost money for hard replacment parts, such as engine and suspension parts, the more stuff you can fabricate yourself, and the more work you are able to do,the less it will cost you, I figure after seven years of work and after making all my own custom parts, doing my own engine work, interior work,my own body work etc. if I hadn't been able to do it myself,I never could have afforded it. E.G if you went to someone and told them, design me a CAI system for a car that has no aftermarket parts made for it,make it out of aircraft aluminum, fabricate it,tig weld it,install a hood scoop for it,paint it,etc. you are talking big big money. but if you can do it yourself, you don't have to pay that money out of pocket. thats just one part,I have hundreds of them, some small some big. i've spent sometimes weeks staring at some small part until i figured out just how to make it the way I want it,then It kind of disappears into the overall design, and a lot of people may not even notice it. for an example, some of the underhood brackets i've made for vaccume lines and stuff, they are painted flat black and blend in like oem,but the same amount of time has gone into them. chances are no one will ever noitice them. it really depends on how much time you want to put into the project, and how much you want to spend

tim, i'd like to see your car in person some time. we def need to do a meet soon. i think i promised that the next one would be like orlando, but there are a few member that couldn't attend. i'm thinking another jax meet. i'll set it up as a junkyard meet. i'm sure you'd be happy since one of the junkyard here has at least one hatch every time i make it up there.

Cool! as soon as I can get these ball joints and wheel bearings in,I want to do a bit of traveling,it's just a money issue at the moment,I'm going to try to order the ball joints soon from summit, and I'm going to try to talk my boss into letting me order the wheel beatrings on the nappa account. not to try to go off topic, but has anyone found an aftermarket source for the brake dust shields? need to put them in at the same time as the hubs go in.

Re: finally a few CLEAR!! pictures

I need the ones for the lxi since these spindles came from one,how much would you want for a couple? I thought about the yard, but they are usually trapped by the hub when it's pressed in. getting the bearings out of these hubs was a SOB I almost broke a hydraulic press getting them to bust loose. I've got a post on that nightmare somewhere on here. also at the yards here they take the wheels off the cars and drop them on the brakes, which tears up the dust shields good. going to order some arp studs too, as difficult as it is to change a stud, best to spring for good ones.

at that one yars, they're a lot more careful with thier cars. they expect people to want parts from under them, so they don't drop them before they have them on wheels and in the air.

Re: finally a few CLEAR!! pictures

it's not the yard that does it,it's people of a certain ethnic persuasion, who sneak across the border, they pull parts, then instead of putting the wheels back on,they yank the jack out and drop the car. I think there is one three gee left there with a single wheel on it still. or they go to pull a part and leave the hood up in the rain,or scatter parts al over the yard pulling one part. saw a nissan today where the transmission wouldn't come out to get the drive shaft, they were beating the transmission to pieces with a sledgehamer so they could get the driveshaft out. oh sad day, they were crushing cars, saw thw remains of an sei,all i could read was the tag on the back. never had seen it before then. I would have bought the entire car.
