    Zeph's Brake Upgrade Thread

This is long overdue and my apologies to Zeph (Zufer) for taking so long.

Zeph has a dark green LX sedan which he wanted to upgrade the brakes on. After reading that the LX-i stuff didn't bolt on, he said "that's crap, I'll make it fit." And so he did. After making sure the brackets and whatnot lined up on cars at the j/y, he got two front calipers from an 88-89 LX-i, went to Autozone and picked up pads and rotors (and replaced a fuel pump in the parking lot when the 450lb springs got the best of the previous pump), and we went to the shop.

So, this is a "bolt in" affair, basically. After you grind away a lot of material haha. The bracket that holds the pads has some clearance issues which Zeph had to solve to make shit bolt together.

Here we see him hard at work:

    Bracket:

So, we went out to test everything and from the get-go there was some interesting scraping sounds. We returned to the shop to find that the pads also needed a little bit of clearancing. Not a problem with the 4" grinder!!

Also for your enjoyment is a picture of his front ground controls with civic struts (he can post details):

So, it's a 'bolt in' upgrade that takes many hours. We like to call it a Zeph-style bolt in.

anyway awesome work. so why doesnt the lxi stuff bolt on? sorry i dont have an lx so i wouldnt know. and to fit those struts he just had to remove the weld for the braket and move it up a bit right?

    Re: Zeph's Brake Upgrade Thread

ok to clear it up a bit.... this is almost beyond what i would consider bolt on. After i got done at justin's shop(he considered it a bolt on as well) there was still a rubbing noise that could be heard... it wasn't constant but it was there. So once i got home i checked it out an found out that the caliper would scrape on the outside of the rotor. So back to grinding and that worked out. however i can't run the vibration stoper thing that press on the pads so the pads rattle at low speed sometimes. Also when i put on different wheels had to clearance the outside of the mounting bracket to fit past the hub. this could also be solved with wheel spacers... but my tires won't fit with a spacer.

for any questions about the struts refer here https://www.3geez.com/forum/showthread.php?t=47746

i am more that willing to answer any questions.... but let me say this.

THIS IS SOMETHING I DON'T RECOMEND DOING

i just wanted to be able to run 13in race tires so i need the brakes to clear them but i wanted the better calipers and the bigger selection of race pads.

i would have just gotten the dual piston calipers that's for sale in the marketplace. would surely beat even your current brake setup.

    Re: Zeph's Brake Upgrade Thread

The thing about those dual piston calipers is that they are expensive.... you have to order rebuild kits from outside the US. And i don't know anything about the pad selection as far as race pads go.

This whole endevour cost me 20 bucks and some time. Well plus pads and rotors but those were something i needed already. Now to make them totally $100. I'm probable gonna run hawk blacks or hawk blues depending on what i find a better deal on. then i'll see how they do on the track mid september.

This is an oddball question but does anyone know which proportioning valve give the most rear bias?

Lol nice job zufer, be sure to post up pics with the new wheels.^^^ And yes, the se-i prop valve would be most rear bias.

    Re: Zeph's Brake Upgrade Thread

are you guys sure about that cause it would seem to me that the lxi vavle would give the most rear bias because it has the "big" brakes in the front and the drums in the rear which i would think take more bias to make work that the disks off the sei

Actually I believe that the drums use less then disk (i think the LXI is 40/20 of something similar to that). The Sei gives you a 40/40, but they are hard to come by. I found a prelude Prop that gives a 35/40 and are quit abundant at the JY, it came from an 88 SI prelude.

    Re: Zeph's Brake Upgrade Thread

hahah yeah some of the late night grinding happened in my garage too.
he just took all the safety shit off my bench grinder and went to town.

this is definetly a 'zeph style bolton' - that should almost be in the wikipedia. it could read (see also, 'Justin86 style bolton')

zeph i still think you could run the safety springs some how if you just bent the metal a little differently.

stock dx/lx rotors. the only part from an 88/89 lxi is the caliper and the pad.
