I have friends who use it and they love it, as for myself I've used Mobil 1, Royal Purple, and Redline Oils never had personal experience with amsoil

    Re: amsoil

I guess I should elaborate just a bit. I used Mobil 1 15W-40 at the very first oil change when the car had 1,500 miles on it. I started usig Amsoil a couple of years later because at the time it was the only brand of synthetic that offered a 10W-30 product. 10w-30 will generally give you better fuel economy than 15W-40. It was awfully pricey, though. I became a distributor just to pay $6/quart. Around the 94/95 time frame other companies started offering 10w-30 synthetics and they were a lot cheaper. My philosophy on synthetics is that they all just come in varying degrees of good. Amsoil may have lab data showing it is better than Syntec, Mobil 1, etc. but how much better does a synthetic need to be? I now mostly use whatever Wal Mart has on sale in a five quart jug and I run it for 10,000 miles. I have done this now for over 273,000 miles and my engine is spotless inside and still gets the same kind of fuel economy it did when new.

My car's been through all types of oils, dino and synthetic, in its lifetime. I think my dad used to use Castrol GTX Synthetic when the car was newer. Then we switched to conventional oil. I used Mobil 5000 5w-30 for almost 2 years and recently switched to Valvoline Maxlife 10w-30 Semi-Synthetic and I have to say that this oil made the gas mileage go up through the roof. I can get 50+ more miles on the tank. And it drives smoother.

    10/22/06- 120,003 miles 1/09/09- 139,000 miles
    11/29/07- 127,945 miles 3/09/09- 141,000 miles
    03/01/08- 129,000 miles
    10/19/08- 136,000 miles

    Re: amsoil

Funny you should mention semi-synthetic. I ran my car for about two years with Amoco Ultimate 15W-50. The weight was not ideal, but I made an offer to the manager at my local Target to buy all of his clearance stock at $0.60 a quart. I found out two years later that Amoco Ultimate was really just a semi-synthetic oil. I got as much as 35mpg on a highway trip at the time.

I think as long as you can keep the oil clean and change it before it breaks down (that's why I use extended OCI's with synthetic) it probably makes little difference which oil is used.
