because i can,and because it's vaccume operated not a linear actuator. seen them with a linear actuator, but never vaccume operated. also when i get the car done, points from the judges hopefully

well at the bottom edge of the seat they don't get in the way there at all, i have no where else to put them whatsoever. more of a can holder. better then the between the ebrake fall over holder. my seat is always all the way back anyway. puts a can about 6 inches off the floor.

i will try to get the cup holder actually bolted to the car tomorrow, then you can see where it sits,it's almost on the floor being on that beam. it doesn't seem to get in the way at all except you have to be carefull getting in and out of the car, therefor thats why it's motorized, it folds out of the way. i could have done a linear motor, but everyone does that. who does vaccume and valves,so on and so forth? i need to bolt it in and the mechanism so i can figure out how to mount the pushrod.

Im having visions of a crushed and partly split can, and soda foaming all over the carpet, when you accidentally push the retract button while your drink is still in there. It needs a weight operated safety switch!!

ROFL i already thought of that,it has a micro switch so it doesn't close by accident.

sorry about the nasty floor carpet is coming soon,it's tax refund time.

test fit,and the holder disappears under the seat.

[floor looks like crap because of dirt will look so much nicer with fresh black carpet.

it's going to be real fun fitting the carpet around all these new things in the interior. i'll have to unbolt everything, put the carpet in,then refind all the holes and remount everything.

it's kind of like watching boob surgery,it's ugly for a while with all the parts exposed, but you know the end result is going to be hot. lol.

Re: finally the vaccume powered cupholder project makes progress

i hope to go by the junkyard tomorrow and get a couple of vacume valves, probably ac idle control valves, then i can get this think hooked up and working. it won't take much now,the switch was wired in a long time ago. i do need to find a power antenna switch that still has the emblem on it. that will confuse people good, since i have no external antenna visible. complete stealth. i have another small gear motor around here somewhere. i thought about motorizing the glovebox someday also. would be pretty easy. that way i could do away with the latch when i paint the dashboard.

Re: finally the vaccume powered cupholder project makes progress

more done, the valve body assembly. i used reverse bias diodes, then i only need two wires to control both valves. i'm using a power antenna switch, when the current is going one direction, one valve operates, when it goes the other direction, the other valve operates. these are a couple of valves out of an old black box, they are self venting. when you turn off power to the valve, the controlled side of the valve vents it's vaccume.

Re: finally the vaccume powered cupholder project makes progress

all built from parts i found or machined out of aluminum except for a few oddball pieces of hardware. total cost about 15 bucks. the cupholder i found in a trunk at the yard, the cyl. was in a dumpster, the lines are salvage. etc. even the rod ends are off of a crashed ultralight.
