It doesn't. Which ever axle has the least amount of load on it, the differential will transfer the power to that axle. Thus, if your axle popped out, that output is now spinning faster and has less load. So the diff transfers all the power to that output...but you don't have an axle there so it just spins.

Gotcha, well I'm going to keep my fingers crossed and keep a long pry bar in my car, so if it pops out in town I can smack it back in.

That is why an LSD is ftw. Once one axle spins faster than the other under load, it locks both of them together. So you can drive with one axle.

The auto axle is shorter and manual is longer...

Running in gear without an axle is really bad on the differential

Good job, my only concern is how much force did you use when you used that hammer.

I used enough force in the whack of the hammer to get it to pop in. Just a little nudge.

Re: 5 speed swap done, but no go!

Ok, so I looked under my car again at where the axle meets the tranny. I think the oil seal part is not there. I'm thinking about pulling the axle and putting a new seal on if the seal is missing.

If the seal is missing would the axle seem kind of loose?

Should the transmission oil seal look like this in the picture? If the axle is installed can you see the oil seal? There is a gap on between my axle and tranny about 1/8th inch? I'm guessing the oil seal should go there?

there pretty cheap and supposed to be replaced every time the axle is changed. i had to change mine after i took it for a 20 minute drive and noticed the whole under side of the car was drenched in oil lol

so yeah go to autozone and get some now!

and before u install them put them in the freezer it really helps and put some white lithium grease on them

Re: 5 speed swap done, but no go!

After looking again, I'm pretty sure it is not there. It just keeps leaking oil alot more now, since I filled the tranny. I can't believe I didn't notice when I was putting the axle in. But then again my brain is fried from 3 days of swapping wholesome goodness. Looks like I'll take the freaker out again for the 10th time. I'm good at now. Takes about 10 minutes.

I suspect your seal is set too deep. I fought my driveshaft for about an hour one day and it too was only about 1/8" shy of home. What happens is the seal sits too deep and gets caught between the axle face and the diff. It gets torn and leaks and keeps the ring from seating making the axle fall out.

Just make sure the seal is flush with the tranny and leave it there.

Ain't no thang. Four dollar seal and an hour and you're rolling again. Interesting the difference in parts. With the Napa axle you can drive around. With the other, you stuck.

Re: 5 speed swap done, but no go!

Well, I got it all done this morning. I got the axle off and turns out that the seal was too far into the tranny like the Dr Snooz man said. Good call on that bro! So I put the new seal in and took it for a spin, so I'll see how it does. Freaking $11 for the seal at Napa! Better work better than a $4 one!

Can't go wrong with the NAPA parts. But it does help to get the ring clip from the Honda dealer. I've had more problems with rebuilt axles and those fucking garbage ring clips they sell you with them.

Never had issues with mine from Pepboys. I did change the clips last time I pulled the axles out but thats because I had the Honda clips on hand.

Everything is ok I guess. Nothing has blown up or fallen apart. Driven it about 50 miles at least.

Congrats, NAPA saved the day! lol I work in a co-op that has a NAPA in it, Love my employee discount (its like 50% off most auto parts).

By 5 speed swap do you mean you went from auto to manual? I want to do that with my 89 LXi and I need a list of ALL the parts needed to complete the job.
