    suspension

my 87 accord lxi is making contact when i hit big bumps and generally bouncing all over the place on smaller ones..what are my options? do they make a coilover that is the same as the oem? I'm not looking to lower it or anything just want to make the ride more comfortable....hopefully somethin not too expensive either

    Re: suspension

    is your car lowered?
if not then you might have some real problems.

If everything is stock then new struts will fix your problem.

Jason: this is why there's a "search" function on this site (right up top, third one from the right). Don't expect comprehensive answers to a newbie question until you have put some of your own effort into it. Probably all you need is a new set of shocks.

    Re: suspension

I have searched and all i come up with is lowering coilovers which i've already stated i do not want. It's hardly a newbie question when I've searched here and on google and can't seem to find STOCK coilovers anywhere. Which is why I asked if anybody knew of a place that sold them online.

I would like to do some housekeeping before we go any farther: coilovers, when used in plural like that, refer to adjustable coil-over-damper suspension. What you need are just the dampers (struts, shocks, whatever).

Luckily for you, no one even makes 'performance' struts for our cars, so any set you buy today will be just fine. A set of Tokico HPs or KYB GR-2s will do nicely and last for several years.

    Re: suspension

you really need to jack the front end up and do a full suspension check visually of all componets. Your car should be able to handle most normal every day road bumps. I inaverdently jump a set of railroad tracks yesterday following another idiot down a road I didn't know at all and I didn't even bottom out. That on stock cheap monroe front struts and original coils.

    Re: suspension

I'm 99% sure what I'm riding on is the 1987 originals, the car handles most bumps with just a lot of bouncing around and what not, but pot holes it does not like. at all.....I'm getting a full set of struts next weekend to put on it....should only cost me about 190 if i do it myself...wouldn't be the first time

    Re: suspension

    Standard front end check,

1: jack up one side of the car until one tire is off the ground. The other side tire must be on the ground still. I use the jacking point under the doors.

2: grab the tire in the air at the 3 and 9 o clock postion and shake/rock back and forth. slow at first. You might need someone to help look underneath. This checks tie-rods,steering rack etc. start kinda slow and work your way up a little harder. Your looking for loosness at the joints. Use common sense of course the steering wheel will move or the other tire may move if you shake the shit outta it.

3: Grab the tire 12 and 6 o clock. Rock back and fourth. This checks the wheel bearing and ball joints and upper links. There should be no play in the wheel bearings.

4: this check might show ball joints/upper link a little better. Use a pry bar under the tire at the 6 o clock pos. pry up look for slop ,looseness while prying. The upper link ball joint and bushings near the body are what your looking at.

This is your basic "front end check" any good mechanic should know. It works for all makes and models of cars

Run it thru this while your working on it. Upper ball joints front and the rear esp wear very quickly. I live in the south with little or no road salt and my rear upper ball joints would last 2 years before showing noticable wear and 4 years before they would start to wear the rear tires funny.

    Re: suspension

yeah I live in South Carolina, my rear tires are wearing fine.....but my fronts when i got them had cord showing on the inside of the tread closer to the inner sidewall...I just assumed the alignment was off and the struts were worn out..I'll get an alignment when i replace the struts

    Re: suspension

Really only the toe is adjustable on the front so don't let any one sell you any kinda of bullshit high dollar alignments. You can pull the caster a little with the radius rods but most shops dont even know about that.

Tie rods are cheap you might slap a set on them while your in there and get it aligned.
